2 A Summary of the Day 1.James Munros Opening Remarks The importance of the day and of workforce involvement A very impressive turnout by the workforce again shows the commitment An opportunity to share best practices and raise concerns Encouragement to get involved and participate in the days events

3 A Summary of the Day 2.Mysterious Acronyms http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/meetings/iacs/oiac/wig/230611/mysterious-acronyms.pdf An excellent presentation by Ross Kerr, Safety Representative from Kittiwake Platform Important to clarify doubts Emphasising the importance to understand Appreciation of the dangerous working environment and the need for knowledge of the environment Knowledge ensures dangers can be highlighted Try to prevent accidents occurring

Behavioural Safety http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/meetings/iacs/oiac/wig/230611/behavourial-safety.pdf Another excellent presentation, this time by Scott Russell (CNR), which raised a lot interest for further information Best way to protect people is to involve them Encourage participation Educate the workforce on the dangers and how they can be prevented Safety is an Attitude

Human Factors http://www.hse.gov.uk/aboutus/meetings/iacs/oiac/wig/230611/human-factors.pdf An extremely interesting and thought provoking presentation from Dave Nicholls (Step Change/WIG) Explained the importance of Human Factors Human Factors is easier than you think Why do people do things? Examples of case studies and why things went wrong How to learn from Human error to prevent accidents Encouraged to consider and take this forward, with examples of supporting material on offer to assist

Team Building Exercise Willie Gibson (PSN/WIG) provided a scenario, asking the attendees to provide answers as an individual and then as a team The results concluded that problems are usually solved better as a group than as an individual. People where asked to consider this outcome and to relate it to the workplace and hopefully the prevention of accidents

When It Doesnt Go To Plan Roy Boag (HSE Regulatory Inspector) provided images of accidents that could have been prevented Some examples provided a lot of amusement but on a serious side it also highlighted how accidents could so easily of been prevented and the things people can do which borders on the ridiculous These examples reminded everyone that accidents are waiting to happen and everyone has a part to play to prevent them

Group Discussion - Some of the subjects raised and discussed included: More Safety Representative intervention Safety Meetings Two Tier system still exists The competence of some workers including lack of being able to communicate Succession Training - Training essential for supervisors including leadership training, apprenticeship themes, refresher training for safety reps How do we get the best out people

Group Discussion (continued) - Some of the subjects raised and discussed included: Accountability – move away from no blame to accountability culture Shift Patterns – the difficulties that can arise Blockers – not being able to do the job Learn the lessons when things go wrong

10 A Summary of the Day Observations from the Event: The events was another success The presentations were well received A lot of subjects were covered There was in depth discussions The attendees participated and engaged extremely well There is still a lot of work to be done and no one can afford to stand still All the offshore workforce needs to be encouraged to get involved We all need to work together
