Assisting Diabetic Subjects with Technology Grace Kim-Ateca Reilly Elementary School IIT Research Mentors: Dr. Ali Cinar Dr. Emmanuel Opara This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under grant No. EEC-0502174. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.

Overview Science/Technology 7 th grade departmentalized science Classroom Approx. 8-10 lessons: 40 min. long each

Goals/Objectives –Understand the physiology and basic management of type 1 diabetes through nutrition and insulin injection. –Understand the differences between what a technology is and what engineers do. –Apply inquiry process to solve an insulin/glucose interaction problem through the use of a computer simulation program. –Consider the ethical issues concerning voluntary participation of diabetes treatment program. –Recognize the efforts of engineers to meet the needs of society by designing technological instruments for a specific use.

Goals/Objectives - Identify different food groups and how they are used by the body.

Illinois learning standards: 11A,f2,3,4,5 –Design and conduct science investigation –Collect and organize data accurately –Interprete and represent results of analysis to produce findings - Report the process and results of an investigation 11B,2 -formulate proposals for technological designs which model or test scientific principles -plan and construct technological design

Illinois learning standards: 12A, f1 -to examine the cellular unit 13A, f3 -Analyze cases of scientific studies 13B,f1 -apply scientific technologies

Assumed pre-requisite knowledge -basic human anatomy -basic cell structure and functions -mechanical functionalities; ie. Buttons press down, levers are pulled or pushed, tubes allow fluids to flow through, etc. -read graphs -follow directions to operate a computer simulation -Draw a diagram

Activities/lessons and supporting materials Background Information on Diabetes Human Digestive System Diagram Activity –Identify what a technology is and what engineers do. Activity –Glucosim project: simulate glucose/insulin interaction –Data/graph recording sheets –Trial No. 2 preset data

Activities/lessons and supporting materials Important Knowledge about Scientific Inquiry Activity –Exploring automated systems Activity - Design and automated glucose monitor with an insulin injector - Collection of pictures of insulin/glucose treatment devices Activity - Identifying food groups and how they are used by the body

Materials Computers with internet access Graph papers, charts Rulers Art supplies Poster boards Pencils, large erasers Activity sheets Overhead projectors Transparencies

Assessment The concepts I plan to assess are: - understanding glucose/insulin interactions in a healthy person and a type 1 diabetic subjects. -understand the functions of pancreas and islet cells -understand how food choices determine the amount of carbohydrate consumption -identify the role of technology and engineering in the field of medicine (define technology and engineering) -pre-test, post-test on above topics -assessment worksheets -designing a model of insulin injection instrument with a glucose monitor

Module Development Plan Week 2: develop proposal and get approval, research more on diabetes, understand how injection controls work Week 3: complete lesson plan materials, collect information to present for background (powerpoint, literature), present progress report Week 4: complete assessment materials, present progress report

Module Development Plan Week 5: complete module, gather materials for final design project Week 6: practice presentation Week 7: present modules at the RET workshop
