4 A CTIVE VS. P ASSIVE The subject of the sentence performs the action Ex: John devoured the pizza. The action’s target becomes the subject Ex: The pizza was devoured by John. Active VoicePassive Voice

5 A CTIVE VS. P ASSIVE EXAMPLES: Candy is always given to the students by Mrs. Diaz and Mrs. Samples. Ms. Samples and Mrs. Diaz are always giving candy to the students. The balloon was blown up by his dad. His dad blew up the balloon.

6 R EWRITE THIS SENTENCE TO CONVEY THE OPPOSITE VOICE “Chewy was such a good dog that he cleaned up all of his toys at the end of the day.” What voice is the above sentence written in? How would written it be in the opposite voice?

8 W HEN WRITING …. Most of the time it is better to use the ACTIVE VOICE when writing because it is stronger and more direct. When you know the WHO of your sentence, it is always best to make the WHO perform the action of the sentence. If you do not know the WHO of your sentence, PASSIVE voice may be used. Ex: The bridge will soon be completed by workers.
