4 The President of the Republic is elected by direct universal suffrage (every 5 years ) The fonctions: -The President of the Republic shall ensure respect for the Constitution. It ensures the continuity of the State. -He appoints the Prime Minister Charles de Gaulle ( 1959- 1969) Georges Pompidou ( 1969-1974) François Mitterand ( 1981-1995)

5 -He orders the laws -It may submit a referendum to citizens He is the guarantor of national independence -He is the head of the armed forces. Jacques Chirac (1995- 2007) Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2012 François Hollande (2012 à nos jours )

6 -The Prime Minister first is the head of Government - He directs the actions of the Government. - It must also ensure the coordination of government action.

7 The Prime Minister, has his own services located at the Hôtel Matignon. -The Prime Minister ensures the execution of the laws

8 . The chamber of deputies contains 577 members of parliament elected in the universal suffrage The Senate The senate contains 348 senators Elected in the indirect universal suffrage In France, two assemblies vote for the laws
