OBJECTIVE 3.01 APPLY THE ELEMENTS OF DESIGN.

SPACE Space is the area provided for a particular purpose Space may have (2) or (3) dimensions: Length & width (ex: a floor) Length, width & height (ex: a room or dwelling) The elements of good design apply to both (2) and (3) dimensional space Any space, no matter what size or shape, can be divided into distinct parts Ex: a room with (2) brightly colored rugs directs attention to the (2) separate areas rather than the total floor space of the room

LINE Line is the visual direction of a design Line can be used to emphasize a pleasing element or disguise an undesirable one Different types of lines have different effects on design Vertical lines lead the eye up, adding height, formality, and strength to a design Horizontal lines lead the eye up to the left or right, suggesting informality and restfulness Curved lines add a softening, graceful effect to designs However, too many curved lines will look busy Diagonal lines suggest action, movement, and excitement. Diagonal lines can be overpowering and tiring, so should be used sparingly

DIAGONAL LINES

CURVED LINES

FORM Form is the outlined edge of a (3) dimensional object Form has length, width and depth/height AS WELL AS volume and mass There are (4) types of form: Realistic - depicting subjects as they exist in reality Abstract – incorporation of simple shapes and color presented together in a unusual way Geometric – influence of modern art Free Ex: A square sheet of glass has shape, but when several pieces are joined together at right angles, a cube is created Cubes, pyramids, cones, and spheres are some common geometric forms, other examples of form are found in furniture and architecture
