4 Purposes of SYAP - benefits to students Opportunity to clearly understand the trades and apprenticeship as a career pathway option. It offers a record of achievement with the Sask. Apprentice Commission for resumes and can have other benefits as well. Our efforts now to enhance student knowledge/awareness better prepares them with the ability to make more informed career decisions.

5 Youth registering as an apprentice with SATCC within five years of completing SYA (with proof of completion) will receive: A Waiver of Apprenticeship registration fee (currently $150); A Waiver of first level technical training tuition providing; 100 hours of trade time credit per SYA level completed (possible 300 hrs in total); The ability to apply for the Skilled Trades SCHOLARHSIP. Forty scholarships worth $1,000 each will be awarded every June to selected, eligible high school graduates who have completed the SYA Program http://www.saskapprenticeship.ca/News/46/pprenticeshi p (SYA) Program. The other Benefits -- For Students who choose the Trades Pathway & Complete the SYA Program

6 When do students begin the SYA Program?. GRADE 8 & 9 --Students are supported to complete NINE - SYAP exploration challenges through learning activities in Practical and Applied Arts classes. Grade 10 – 12 student are supported to attend a career fair, organizes the PAA Module 88 assignments in their Portfolio Binders and complete the regular PAA Courses (needed to Graduate) Grade 12 – Students are shown their SYAP Challenge Completions and asked if they want to register and obtain A Certificate – if yes Registration occurs. This Apprenticeship certificate can be applied to resumes CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION of the SASK. YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM Officially - registration occurs in grade 10 -- The SYAP Registration Form is completed and sent to Apprenticeship Commission

7 Ways Students Are supported to obtain this certificate: Grade 8 PAA course – Completing the PAA Career Work Experience Module 9A & 10A (in which one of the resources to be used is the Young Worker Readiness Course Resource). This is one of the SYAP Challenges completed Grade 9 PAA Course – PAA Module 88 (Apprenticeship in Sask.) in which seven of the SYAP challenges can be completed. Spring grade 9 – Parents and Students informed o the SYAP program and its benefits and grade 9 students complete registration forms Grade 10-12 – The remaining 4 challenges and school staff will assist the student to apply for their certificate, or scholarship etc.

8 SYAP Student Challenges (12 in total) (The Challenges can be completed in any order) Grade 8 SYAP Challenge completion are colored Grade 9 SYAP Challenge Completions Grade 10-12 SYAP Challenge Completions SYAP Challenges Level 1 1. Complete a PAA Course (10, 20, 30) 2. One page report on a trade 3. Completion of the Young Workers Readiness 4. Conduct a discussion asking what a community, family member or a teacher knows about the trades knows about apprenticeship SYAP Challenges Level 2 1.Complete a second PAA Course (10,20,30) 2.Discussion with a journeyman 3.Career Path Chart of Trades Person or Outline the four steps to Achiever Journey Person status. 4. Exploration of Trades Websites SYAP Challenges Level 3 1.Understand Apprenticeship Terminology 2.Portfolio – Organize Trades related information section in Portfolio 3. Trades job shadow or work experience 4. Attend a career fair

9 School Recording of Completions is to assist Student application for SYAP Certificate Student SYAP challenge completions are recorded from grade 8-12 on the school SYAP server system

10 Seals of Completion Upon completion of all three SYA levels the school submits the application (before June 10 th ) and applies for the student to receive their certificate. CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION of the SASK. YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM for their resumes and other purposes if entering the trades

11 Students who transition from NLSD Schools will leave with: the knowledge and awareness of the trades and apprenticeship as one of the career pathways available to them. a record of achievement from the Sask. Youth Apprentice Commission to use in their resumes and career portfolios
