FESTIVALS

The Worlds Largest Food Fight!
Spanish Culture La Tomatina The Worlds Largest Food Fight!

Spanish Culture La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain.

Spanish Culture Thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a brutal battle where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

Spanish Culture Approximately 20,000–40,000 tourists come to the tomato fight, multiplying by several times Buñol's normal population of 9,000.

Spanish Culture They must squish the tomatoes before throwing for safety precautions. One hour later, the fireworks mark the end of the fight. At this point, no more tomatoes can be thrown.

SPANISH CULTURE The tomatoes are tasteless inferior quality, imported from ‘Extremadura’, a Spanish autonomous community. The history of the festival dates back to 1945, when it started as a fight between groups of brawlers on street, who used the vegetables from by-standing hawkers as weapons. Over the years, it has inspired numerous similar commemorations across the world – in Columbia, Chile, China and USA. In India, the hosting of a Tomatina event in Banglore, Mysore and Delhi were denied by the State Governments, where they said, "In the name of Tomatina, permission should not be granted to waste tomatoes". Guess, it was a good decision.
