5 CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES SERVICES DE SOUTIEN AU PERSONNEL ET AUX FAMILLES DES FORCES CANADIENNES Understanding their goals (short and long term, balancing them with those of the CF) Understand their needs (individual and family, balancing them with those of the CF) Gain knowledge on their experience and skills (education, work history, activities, motivation) Knowing your Subordinates and promoting their interests/welfare

7 CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES SERVICES DE SOUTIEN AU PERSONNEL ET AUX FAMILLES DES FORCES CANADIENNES RTW Coordinator/Svcs Staff Importance of RTW -Work re-establishes a routine for the member -Provides a purpose for the member -Re-establishes self esteem/confidence -Provides a social opportunity for the member -Allows the member to feel they are contributing Collaboration necessary to: -Ensure member’s short term goals are being met -Attempt to incorporate member’s long term goals into a RTW -Ensure member continues to be challenged and does not become bored

8 CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES SERVICES DE SOUTIEN AU PERSONNEL ET AUX FAMILLES DES FORCES CANADIENNES Case Managers Importance of CM -The Sp Pl conduit to CFMS -Ensures that we are aware of the current MELs -Advance warning of future T-Cats, PCats -Great source of advice in pre-planning any workable plan, to consult with Work re-establishes a routine for the member. -They are integral to the Casualty Team Meetings Collaboration/Communication necessary to: -Knowing the MELs and the limits that impose upon the member’s activities is key to our whole process.

9 CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES SERVICES DE SOUTIEN AU PERSONNEL ET AUX FAMILLES DES FORCES CANADIENNES Regional Adaptive Fitness (RAFs) Importance of Physical Training (PT): -PT re-establishes a routine for the member -Re-establishes self esteem/confidence by seeing results -Provides a social opportunity for the member -Great stress reliever Collaboration necessary to: -Ensure that MELs are considered when setting up a PT programme for the member -Ensure a link to Soldier On activities and training camp opportunities

10 CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES SERVICES DE SOUTIEN AU PERSONNEL ET AUX FAMILLES DES FORCES CANADIENNES FLOs - Family is important to the member - support -Illness and injury causes stress on the family structure -Family stress can have an impact on the recovery/rehabilitation of the member -Need to recognize when we might need to call or refer a member to the FLO/Base SW -Fine line – don’t want to create problems that aren’t there -Great source of advice in dealing with difficult members

11 CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES SERVICES DE SOUTIEN AU PERSONNEL ET AUX FAMILLES DES FORCES CANADIENNES VAC -Talk to the VAC people in your office -When members/you don’t understand reasons for VAC decisions, they are helpful in explaining the processes, and providing advice on how to proceed -Recommend setting up transition meetings between DND and VAC for members transitioning – beneficial for the members and VAC, and ensuring that CF members don’t fall through the cracks

12 CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES SERVICES DE SOUTIEN AU PERSONNEL ET AUX FAMILLES DES FORCES CANADIENNES OSISS/ISN -Great resource for the member -Many members isolate themselves -Great resource for the Sp Pl staff to gain a better appreciation for the injury/illness and how we can help as supervisors

14 CANADIAN FORCES PERSONNEL AND FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES SERVICES DE SOUTIEN AU PERSONNEL ET AUX FAMILLES DES FORCES CANADIENNES Things I have learned, or have been reinforced -Know your limits in knowledge and your gaps in experience, seek advice and collaborate -Set your boundaries and everyone stays in their lane -Know and build the resources in your AOR -Build on successes, learn from the challenges -Think outside the box -Communicate up, down and sideways -The ISPC model works best when we know the roles of others -Manage expectations of the member
