LHCb SLIMOS training Shift Leader In Matters Of Safety = SLIMOS Safety Code A9 Safety Responsibilities in the Departments: Shift Leaders in Matter of Safety (SLIMOS) are appointed by and are accountable to their GLIMOS. They ensure continuity of all safety matters during shift work and are expected to be knowledgeable about all those aspects of the experiment for which they have been given Safety responsibility. Role of the SLIMOS As SLIMOS you are the shift leader - or vice versa 2

LHCb SLIMOS training Role of the SLIMOS  First and foremost you have to react on all Safety Alarms and Warnings.  Ensure the coordination and the exchange of information between XCR and Fire Brigade in case of Alarm L3, Incident or Accident.  Report to the GLIMOS any incident or situation at risk.  Monitor closely the radiation levels at LHCb and report immediately any deterioration to the LHC control room.  Ensure that visits/access follow the appropriate rules / operate the access control and safety system. 3

LHCb SLIMOS training SAFETY SYSTEMS Level 3 alarm systems Personnel / major equipment safety DSS Detector Safety System Detector Safety Level 3 systems and DSS are independent (different sensors and actuators) However, DSS gets the information from L3 systems and take actions to protect equipments. Issues L3 alarms to FB Limited automatic actions (local cables) FB comes to P8 RESET only by FB Ex: Ambient Smoke, AUG, Evacuation, ODH, Flood, Red Phone, Flammable gas… Issues DSS alarms to XCR Complex automatic actions (PLC) SLIMOS is in charge RESET by SLIMOS Ex: Rack smoke, Water leak, electronic overheat, … 5

LHCb SLIMOS training Level 3 alarms systems All level 3 alarms are available in the Control Room (XCR) on CSAM console (image copy of the SCR display). Watch the synoptic view of P8! ODH (Oxygen Deficiency Hazard) Smoke AUG (=Arrêt d’ Urgence General) -someone has pushed the AUG button) Evacuation –evacuation alarm trigger by the system or by a person Red Phone – someone picked up the red phone Flood – water in the UX85 Flammable gas – only in SG8 Lift – PZ85 9

LHCb SLIMOS training General reaction of FB to alarm levels Reaction 1.The operator of SCR (Safety Control Room) alerts the intervention team 2.The SCR calls the XCR (eXperiment Control Room) to inform about the departure to an intervention in the experimental area and asks weather the XCR has additional information. 3. Establish contact with the XCR/SLIMOS. May ask the officer of permanence (represents SC-FB head) to come to XCR. 4. The FB “Chef d’Intervention” lead the intervention. Trigger Interventions of the FB can be triggered by  L3 alarms system  Any emergency alarm (e.g. phone call 74444) 10

LHCb SLIMOS training Don’t panic, don’t put yourself at risk. Secure yourself and endangered persons first! The Fire Brigade will come to P8 and establish contact to the XCR! The role of the SLIMOS is to collect and provide information to the FB to assist them: Detector status (~source of the alarm), magnetic field, radiation level, ongoing activity, Location of people at risk … Take the necessary actions (Manual Trigger of evacuation, switch off power, beam dump request …) in coordination with FB. Take care of equipment safety Participate/organize a debriefing with the FB (make sure that all parties concerned are informed and are aware of the situation) Fill Alarm checklist form available in the nearby folder Update logbook. General reaction of SLIMOS to alarm levels 11

LHCb SLIMOS training Level 3 alarms: SLIMOS DUTIES Fire alarm (Smoke) The cavern, electronic barracks and the surface are equipped with a sniffer network, that detects smoke. Indication: Alarm on the CSAM console, sonorous evacuation alarm Where: At the surface, electronic barracks, in the cavern. Protect yourself and colleagues. If the fire is small, try to put it out with a portable extinguisher If there is an uncontrollable fire, press the evacuation alarm and leave the area. Cut off the power, if not yet done: AUG, DSS, ECS 12

LHCb SLIMOS training Level 3 alarms: SLIMOS DUTIES 13

LHCb SLIMOS training Level 3 alarms: SLIMOS DUTIES Fire alarm (Smoke) : SNIFFER The detectors are equipped with a sniffer network (16 lines), that detects smoke. Indication: Alarm on the SNIFFER console Where: On the detector. If Level 2 (yellow), SLIMOS reset on the Sniffer console.  If still present, call FB 74444, act as for fire alarm  If reset works, watch carefully all the detectors involved (analog values smoke concentration in neighboring detectors, trips or electrical problems, heat sensors …). If something still abnormal call FB 74444 If Level 3 (Red), act as for fire alarm. Locate precisely the detector(s) involved and prepare the intervention of FB Ask for a beam dump. 14

LHCb SLIMOS training Level 3 alarms: SLIMOS DUTIES Oxygen deficiency: In case of a helium leak at the LHC cryogenics equipment or a gas leak at the RICH 2, an ODH (level 3) alarm will be triggered Indication: Alarm on the CSAM console, sonorous evacuation alarm Where: In the cavern. Action: Inform Fire Brigade on experiments status, once they arrived. Figure out if the alarms comes from the ceiling (He leak) or the Bunker (heavy gas leak). ->Info on CSAM or gas system console. Locate all the personnel present in the pit. Inform the fire brigade if you have hints about workplaces at risk and missing personnel. During beam operation nobody at risk as UX85B is closed. 15

LHCb SLIMOS training Level 3 alarms: SLIMOS DUTIES Flood: LHCb is one of the lowest point of the LHC ring. Water pumps taking care of the removal of the groundwater at point 8. The water collected in the sewers of UX85 is drained to the PZ where it is collected in a pit. When the level exceeds a reference level, the water is pumped to the surface. If the level reaches an alarm level, a second pump is activated and a Level3 alarm is issued. Indication: Alarm on the CSAM console. Where: In the cavern, pumps are close to the PZ shaft. Action: Inform Fire Brigade on experiments status, once they arrived 16

LHCb SLIMOS training Level 3 alarms: SLIMOS DUTIES Push buttons: A rret d’ U rgence G eneral, Evacuation, Red Telephone: Indication: Alarm on the CSAM console, sonorous alarm. Where: In the cavern, at the surface. Call 74444 to get more info.  Enquire to know whether it is a real alarm or a mistake.  If you know it is a mistake inform them  localized the triggered button from CSAM message Take the necessary actions (Manual Trigger of evacuation, switch off power, beam dump request …) Collect information to support FB intervention (localization of the event, detector status, follow-up and organize evacuation …) AUGs, evacuation buttons and red telephones are at various places in the cavern and at the surface. By making use of, an alarm level 3 will be triggered. 17

LHCb SLIMOS training 18 EMERGENCY PANNEL SLIMOS can act on parameter which are relevant for safety: Power, Magnetic field, Evacuation, Cooling fluid …

LHCb SLIMOS training Safety and DSS Web page: http://lhcb-comp.web.cern.ch/lhcb-comp/DSS/default.htmhttp://lhcb-comp.web.cern.ch/lhcb-comp/DSS/default.htm The main goal of the DSS is to detect abnormal and potentially harmful situations and to minimize damages to the experiment’s equipment by taking protective actions. In addition, the development of higher level alarms with more serious consequences can be avoided. The DSS is composed of a Front-End and a Back-End part. The Front- End is based on a redundant PLC system, to which the safety-critical part of the DSS task is delegated. The PLC Front-End is capable of running autonomously and of automatically taking predefined protective actions whenever required. The back-end supervises the front-end and serves as interface to the PLCs. The DSS system consists of three racks (DSU) and two consoles to the back-end, one in the control room, one in D2. Sensors and actuators are grouped by DSUs (EDMS: 580 080). The DSUs are situated in: D2 UX85A.A2B01 D3 UX85A.D3A08 Control room SX85.R007 DSS 20

LHCb SLIMOS training The first indication of an Alarm is a flashing light and siren in the control room. In case of an alarm: -Checklist on DSS desk - stop the siren with the red button close to the DSS console (safety panel). - check on the DSS screen the cause of the Alarm. For most of the alarms the action “CCC_signal_send” is taken. An ‘expert’ is automatically called and CCC receives the signal “ Alarm_DSS_in_LHCb” - login with Slimos account. -Call CCC/TI 72201 to confirm that you take care of the alarm -make a quick diagnostic, contact DSS piquet. -Call the Run Chief and the affected SD piquets (see telephone list close to DSS station). - enter comments in DSS Elog : http://lblogbook.cern.ch/DSShttp://lblogbook.cern.ch/DSS Safety and DSS In case of an Alarm: 25

LHCb SLIMOS training Safety and DSS Click in this column to Acknowledge the ALARMS Click in this column to reset the ACTIONS The SENSOR and WARNING appear and disappear themselves without ‘operator action’. The ALARMS disappear after a click (only reset if the sensor is returned in its nominal status). The ACTIONS disappear after a click (only reset possible if the alarm linked has disappeared). Alarm-action acknowledgment: coordinated by Run chief. Needs agreement from SD piquet (EDMS 1054586 ) 26

LHCb SLIMOS training Safety and DSS ‘right click’ on the alarm / “‘show”: allows to display the alarm panel with its description and instructions. 27

LHCb SLIMOS training Safety and DSS A History is available for each Sensor, Alarm and Action. The general “logbook” shows all DSS events in chronological order and helps to understand the alarms that have been triggered. Synoptic views 28

LHCb SLIMOS training Safety and DSS The synoptic representation helps to localize the sensors in fault and the equipment concerned by the actions. to return to the display with tabs. 29
