Walkathon Leanne, Gilberto, and Alicia are participating in a walkathon to raise money for a local animal shelter. Each participant must find a sponsor to pledge a certain amount per mile walked. Write the three statements below in your notebook and answer the question below. Leanne asks her sponsor to pledge $10 for each mile she walks. Gilberto asks his sponsor to pledge $20 for each mile he walks. Alicia asks her sponsor to pledge $50 plus $5 for each mile she walks. Rank the three people in order of who you think will raise the most to least amount of money based on the above information.

ANSWER(S) If the participants walk 3 miles, then Alicia($65), Gilberto($60), and Leanne($30). If the participants walk 4 miles, than Gilberto($80), Alicia ($70), and Leanne($40). What could have helped us to show our data better? A table or graph would have been great!

Example of a Table(Finish) Miles Walked$(Leanne)$(Gilberto)$(Alicia) 1102055 2204060 33060 44080 550 660 7 8 9 10 11 12

We will now graph the data Miles Walked$(Leanne)$(Gilberto)$(Alicia) 1102055 2204060 3306065 4408070 55010075 66012080 77014085 88016090 9 18095 10100200100 11110220105 12120240110

Graphing Lets make a first quadrant graph to represent the data for all three. You need three colored pencils We MUST label our x-axis and y- axis and pick the correct increments In your notebook(graph paper) draw a graph like the one to the right. What should we label our x-axis? Miles or Money? What Title? What would be good increments to use for our variables?

Graphing Lets start with Leanne and graph the points associated for her walkathon. Now look at your table and we will graph Leanne’s values for every mile walked. Since we have two other people to compare, lets use different colored pencils and graph Gilberto and Alicia with different colors. Now write down some observations about what you see.

Writing Expressions Write an expression for the amount of money the team will raise depending on how many miles they walk(x). Leanne = 10x Gilberto = 20x Alicia = 5x + 50 Team = 35x + 50 If these three were on the same team and were going to walk the same amount of miles together to find out how much they would make together, we would need to write an expression for each individual, and add them together to represent the team total.

Sample Example On a separate part of paper….. Use the Team Equation 35x + 50 to make a table for values of 1-12 miles like we did earlier for each individual participant. Also, create a first quadrant graph labeling the both axis and choose increments that are appropriate. Then graph your points from the table.

SAMPLE QUESTIONS (1) If the team walks 11 miles together, how much money will they raise? (2) To the nearest mile, how far would the team have to walk to raise $245? (3) If the team wanted to raise $800, how far would they have to walk? Use a fraction or decimal. Is that possible?
