2 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 2 The presentation has been designed so that it can be used independently of GMTU Report 999 for those who want an overview of the traffic movements around Tameside but do not wish to see the detailed tabulations GMTU Reports 999 & 999P are part of a series of reports presenting the data from the 2002 GMATS surveys GMATS Surveys 2002 Report 999P - Tameside Key Centre

3 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 3 Travellers leaving Tameside Key Centre (Ashton-under-Lyne centre) by car & bus were asked about their journeys as they crossed a cordon around the centre Rail passengers boarding at Ashton station were also interviewed This presentation gives an overview of the findings from those surveys It considers first people who had visited the Centre, then those travelling through GMATS Surveys 2002 Tameside Key Centre

5 5 Note that the GMATS survey points lie outside the ring road. The reason for this was to maximise the usefulness of the data, particularly in developing traffic models The Key Centre monitoring points for the LTP lie inside the ring road except to the north where the railway line forms the boundary This latter cordon defines the Key Centre used in this analysis Tameside Key Centre Definition

9 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 9 71% of car & 70% of bus trips ended within Tameside borough Only 4% of car trips and 3% of bus trips ended outside Greater Manchester In contrast, 25% of rail trips ended outside GM and only 13% within Tameside borough Visitors to the Key Centre Where did they go after their visit?

11 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 11 For most activities, car trips were longer on average than bus trips Bus trips averaged 4km and car trips 5km Car trips were significantly longer than bus trips for workers (5.5km), business visits (7.8km) and education (6.3km) Visitors to the Key Centre How far did they travel? 13 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 13 On average each car carried 1.53 people Occupancy varied widely with activity in the Centre: –Work 1.22 –Shopping 1.79 –Education 1.83 –Social/leisure 1.59 82% of drivers leaving work, 65% of those on business visits and also leisure travelled alone Visitors to the Key Centre What was the average occupancy of visitors’ cars?

18 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 18 The average distance for all goods vehicles was 7km HGVs travelled an average of 47 km compared to 7km for LGVs and 3km for MGVs Commercial Vehicles How far did they travel?

19 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 19 69% of all trips leaving the Key Centre were going home The next main activities were going shopping (7%) and business visits (6%) and to drop off/pick up passengers (6%) Visitors to the Key Centre What did they do at their destination?

20 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 20 72% of trips finished in Tameside. This did not vary much for different destination activities 27% of people going home finished in the rest of Greater Manchester and only 1% outside the county Visitors to the Key Centre Where did they go/for what purpose?

21 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 21 All the previous slides have referred to trips starting in the Key centre. These next slides look at all trips crossing the survey cordon In the case of bus trips, all trips crossing the survey cordon are included In the case of rail, only those trips which start at Ashton-under-Lyne Station are included i.e. passengers on trains travelling through the station were not surveyed All trips passing through the survey cordon

22 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 22 88% of all trips crossing the cordon were made by car, 11% by bus and less than 1% by rail 70% of car and 65% of bus trips finished within Tameside Only 5% of rail trips finished inside Tameside, 72% were travelling to Manchester and 10% finished outside Greater Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon How and where were they travelling?

23 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 23 30% of all trips were either ‘Home to Work’ or ‘Work to Home’ trips ‘Home to Shopping’ and ‘Shopping to Home’ accounted for another 17% of trips 17% of ‘Home to Employer’s Business’ and ‘Employer’s Business to Home’ ended outside Greater Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon What was their purpose?

24 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 24 The average distance travelled by cars was 10km, buses 6km and rail 14km The longest distances for all modes were ‘Home to employer’s business’ (26km) and ‘Employer’s business to home’ (25km) ‘Home to work’ trips were 13km by car, 8km by bus and 13km by rail. The return directions were 11km, 6km and 18Km respectively All trips passing through the survey cordon How far were they travelling?

25 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 25 93% of people walked from the alighting bus stop 6% caught another bus Bus trips passing through the survey cordon How did people get to their destination from the bus?

26 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 26 On average there were 10 people per bus crossing the cordon between 07:00 and 19:00 This varied from an average occupancy of 8 during the morning peak (07:00 to 09:30) and 10 during the inter-peak (09:30 to 15:30) to 14 in the evening peak (15:30 to 18:30) Bus trips passing through the survey cordon What was their average occupancy?

28 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 28 On average each car had 1.48 occupants Occupancy was lowest in the morning peak with an average occupancy of only 1.35 76% of cars had no passengers in the morning peak Car trips passing through the survey cordon What was their average occupancy?

30 Tameside Key Centre Analysis 30 34% of all goods vehicle crossing the cordon were being used to move goods In the case of lorries this rises to over 75% 46% of LGVs were being used for business use and 11% for personal use Commercial Vehicles passing through the survey cordon What were they doing in the Key Centre?
