3 The Mentor Role and the Board Lead role Mentors Will be experienced staff who are employed within the NHS or a Higher Education Institution Will have the skills and expertise to support personal, professional and career development Will enable fellows and assist with the exploration of healthcare within the organisational and national context Will use coaching and facilitation skills to support and challenge Will maximise the development of leadership potential with the overall aim of enhancing patient care. Board lead Essential role and key contact in Board who will work closely with managers, mentors and fellows to maximise fellowship potential

4 Mentor Role Finding your clinical coach/mentor – self selection or allocation? Fellow/ Mentor meet regularly ( at least every 2-3 months and find your own pace and way of working) Meetings need focus but flexibility, Fellows and mentor agree on defined issues to discuss from practice and Masters Consider shadowing mentor with specific learning objectives identified e.g Communication skills, dealing with difficult people, handling self in meetings Mentor Fellow relationship requires balance of support and challenge – to be open to examining issues, consider wider context (transferable action learning skills) Mentor using their networks to enhance fellow experience and network

5 Board Lead Role Formal link between Fellows, NES and the rest of the board with regard to Fellowship Accountable for public funding outlined in SLA Will monitor your progress – in a supportive way as well as auditing Will establish and maintain communication with ECCF group as a whole – email and face to face Communication with Charge Nurses/Team Leads/Clinical Managers as necessary to ensure effective working of fellowship Sharing ECCF good news within the Board (e.g. Newsletters, Reports to Nurse Director and Senior Nurses)

Be motivated to get what you need and want Build on the skills, effective behaviours you already have Make best use of your mentor and board lead to get the best out of the opportunity Establish and maintain good communication networks to keep moving things forward.
