PowerPoint® goes to the movies Terry Loane 26 March 2009

Aim The aim of this workshop is to help you improve the quality of your learning resources by using some simple techniques to include video material.

Objectives By the end of the session you will: Be able to embed videos from YouTube, VideoJug, TeacherTube etc. within a PowerPoint presentation Be able to convert a PowerPoint presentation to a movie with a soundtrack that can be stored locally or uploaded to YouTube Have explored and reflected on how the use of video can enhance learning and teaching.

The greatest educational resource the world has ever known? YouTube is a fantastically rich source of learning material. This presentation includes links to YouTube movies that demonstrate various ways of linking PowerPoint and video. (Your computer will need an internet connection to access the movies.) The first video (slide 6) explains the technique used to embed all of the videos in this presentation.

Note: The next four slides each contains an embedded link to a YouTube movie. Problems can arise when including links to more than one YouTube movie in a PowerPoint presentation. Here are some hints: # Once you start watching a movie see it through to the end before moving to the next slide. If you don’t want to watch the whole movie, then pull the slider along to the right, and watch the last few seconds. # If you get into a situation where the movies malfunction then close the PowerPoint presentation and re-open it.

Embed a YouTube video in PowerPoint

Some FAQs relating to the movie on the previous slide

PowerPoint to Windows Movie Maker and YouTube

PowerPoint to PhotoStory

A word of warning A number of factors can lead to your embedded movie refusing to play (e.g. poor or non-existent internet connection; shockwave flash player not installed on the computer) So if you are going to make a public presentation that includes an embedded link to an online movie clip, always check that it will work before the audience arrives

Reflections on how the use of video can enhance teaching and learning
