New topic

Global Patterns of Disease The aim of this lesson: To describe and explain the global distribution of diseases of poverty. To describe and explain the global distribution of diseases of affluence.

What is the global pattern of health? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbkSRLYSojo#t=276 Watch the above video: In 1810 what was the relationship between income and life expectancy? What caused developed countries move on? What events cause life expectancy to drop? Which area in China is more developed? What is the pattern in 2009?

Task 1: Major causes of death in rich and poor countries In your books note the similarities and the differences and try to explain some of them. Why do different disease affect people in rich and poor countries? Based on what you know about development, are any of the causes of death in poor countries linked to development? Major causes of death in rich countries a) Coronary heart disease b) Stroke c) Lung cancers d) Lower respiratory infections (pneumonia and influenza) e) Colon and rectal cancers f) Alzheimer/Dementia g) Diabetes h) Breast cancer i) stomach cancer Major causes of death in poor countries a) Coronary heart disease c) HIV/AIDS d) Stroke e) Perinatal conditions (infant mortality) f) Diarrhoeal diseases g) Tuberculosis (TB) h) Malaria i) Road traffic accidents

In groups…. You will each be given a different disease You need to describe the pattern shown on the map Then explain why you think there is this pattern

HIV Prevalence 1.Describe the pattern on the graph 2.Explain why this pattern may exist

Malaria Cases 1.Describe the pattern on the graph 2.Explain why this pattern may exist

Cholera Cases 1.Describe the pattern on the graph 2.Explain why this pattern may exist

Blinding Disease 1.Describe the pattern on the graph 2.Explain why this pattern may exist

Diabetes Prevalence 1.Describe the pattern on the graph 2.Explain why this pattern may exist

Influenza Outbreaks 1.Describe the pattern on the graph 2.Explain why this pattern may exist

Explain the global distribution of diseases of poverty The chance of an individual succumbing to disease is affected by a range of factors, which will depend on where they live, their age, their social circumstances, their lifestyle and other environmental factors. Many of these are affected by social inequality. What is meant by a disease of poverty? Diseases of poverty tend to be transmitted through close human contact due to the living conditions of people in areas like shanty towns, or vectors, such as insects. They are not completely confined to people living in poverty, but are more likely to be experienced by them

Conclusion How do the patterns of disease vary spatially? Why is this?
