4 Let’s Talk About How do the musicians in a symphony create a powerful sound? How do we know this teenager’s melody will reach many others? In what ways might each band member inspire others? How do artists inspire people with their music?

5 Listen: “Bud, not Buddy” is about jazz musicians having a jam session. Listen for the words: Jam session Steady Beat Fiddle

6 Amazing Words Jam session- a gathering at which jazz musicians play music and improvise together My brother’s band holds a jam session every Sunday in our basement Steady- regular, even He played the guitar with a steady beat.

7 Amazing Words Beat- a unit of time or accent in music
A waltz has three beats to the measure. The best dance music has a good beat. fiddle- another word for a violin He pulled his bow across the strings of his fiddle.

8 Main Idea The most important idea that the author wants to get across
Smaller pieces of information that support, explain, or tell more about the main idea are called details In “Aretha: An American Queen” let’s read the first paragraph. The second and third sentences seem close to the main idea.

Finish reading the story. Use the graphic organizer to summarize the main idea and details of the passage Now that you have finished the story, let’s talk about it’s text structure.

The second paragraph tells when and where Franklin was born. The next tells about her early teens. The fourth paragraph tells what happened after she turned eighteen. The last paragraph is about 1987. So, what text structure is this written in? Sequential, cause and effect, or compare and contrast?

He loved to ride horses as a teenager. Teach your partner this word
