5. 1. Author’s background/Setting: What details of the setting are significant? How do they help create a mood or point to the larger theme/purpose of the text? 2. Character: Which characters are round vs. flat? Dynamic vs. static? Why do you think Jackson created these characters this way? Does it point to a larger topic or theme of the story? Describe Tessie. If Jackson was to make a statement about women and women’s roles through this character, what do you think is her purpose? 3. Symbolism: How many symbols can you find? What do they represent? 4. Theme/Purpose: What observation about human nature is Jackson making? How did you respond to our lottery? Are we that different?
