Ms. Mo LCI OCSA

Be prepared to answer these questions should Ms. Mo call on you in 7 minutes:  What are the five elements of plot structure?  Can you give examples of them according to “The Story of An Hour”?  In what time order do events take place? Linear? Flashback? Episodic?  Give three quotes, reflecting positive connotation, to show that Louise Mallard was feeling more excited than depressed as the text progressed.

 What are the different elements and aspects of a fictional text we may look at to gain a deeper, more nuanced understanding and appreciation of the author’s craft as well as the story itself?

 Setting ◦ Time period, time of day, weather, place/location, season, environment ◦ How it affects the events? How it reflets the character?  Literary devices: ◦ Figurative language: Metaphor, simile, personification, onamotopoiea, imagery, symbol ◦ irony  Character: ◦ How they change over time = dynamic vs. static ◦ Flat vs. round ◦ Conflict: internal vs. external; central conflict ◦ Indirect vs. direct characterization  Theme/purpose of the text

1. Author’s background/Setting: What details of the setting are significant? How do they help create a mood or point to the larger theme/purpose of the text? 2. Character: Which characters are round vs. flat? Dynamic vs. static? Why do you think Jackson created these characters this way? Does it point to a larger topic or theme of the story? Describe Tessie. If Jackson was to make a statement about women and women’s roles through this character, what do you think is her purpose? 3. Symbolism: How many symbols can you find? What do they represent? 4. Theme/Purpose: What observation about human nature is Jackson making? How did you respond to our lottery? Are we that different?
