1 Discovery Education: United Streaming How Videos Can Supplement Classroom Activities Scrolling through the video clips, I take my students on many trips! Learning from ideas present and past, The action makes the learning last. As environments and concepts come to life, Students become as sharp as a knife! S. Sterkin 2008

2 Teacher Uses: For our African animal project, the students each chose one animal to research. Through resources such as internet websites, encyclopedias, and articles, they discovered the special aspects of their animal’s appearance, their ecosystem, and the adaptations they have to survive in the wild. The students were then expected to transfer this learning into an essay filled with descriptive details and their “voice.” The video was shown after they conducted their research to exemplify how to make this connection in their writing. Because the clip uses an African elephant to show how to write descriptive sentences, they were able to see a relatable example that they had prior knowledge about. 3 Teacher Uses: On Cinco de Mayo, two of my Mexican students’ parents visited our classroom. They brought homemade tamales, sopes, and tacos that were delicious! They students had read about the history of this Mexican holiday and listened to music played by Mexican guitarists, Rodrigo y Gabriela. When it was time to eat, we watched this video clip that showed the traditions of the holiday and how it is celebrated. Students who knew about Cinco de Mayo were able to relate to the video and share their own stories, while others were provided with a “virtual experience” to see and hear the traditions of their friends’ families. 4 Student Uses: During the students’ computer center, they were able to review root words, prefixes and suffixes by watching the video, “Pendemonium: The Italian Job.” As the characters showed how words were made, they equated the prefixes and suffixes to “accessories” that the root word wears. After lessons with this concept, auditory and visual learners were given the opportunity to further delve into the concept in an entertaining way. With these ideas in mind, they were then able to complete their independent assignments using root words, prefixes and suffixes. 5 Student Uses: Click here to see the movie! This year, my students have taken action against pollution and Global Warming. We have started a recycling program in our school, participated in the Potomac Watershed cleanup, and even wrote letters to the Maryland senate in support of the “Global Warming Act” (senate bill 309). In order to become educated in this matter, the students read articles and watched this video about the causes of Global Warming, and what they can do to hinder it. With this information, they were able to write well-informed letters and even received responses from the senate environmental committee! http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/search/assetDetail.cfm?guidAssetID =A47C6070-863F-46D8-AE87-06E1D7BACD70
