Food and Drug Administration - Critical Path Initiative 1 The Critical Path Initiative is FDA's effort to stimulate and facilitate a national effort to modernize the sciences through which FDA-regulated products are developed, evaluated, and manufactured. The Initiative was launched in March 2004, with the release of a report entitled Innovation/Stagnation: Challenge and Opportunity on the Critical Path to New Medical Products. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
3
Critical path analysis 1 The 'critical path method (CPM)' is an algorithm for scheduling a set of project activities. It is an important tool for effective project management. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
4
Critical path analysis - History 1 The precursors of what came to be known as Critical Path were developed and put into practice by DuPont between 1940 and 1943 and contributed to the success of the Manhattan Project. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
5
Critical path analysis - Basic technique 1 The essential technique for using CPM Samuel L. Baker, Ph.D. [http://hspm.sph.sc.edu/COURSES/J716/ CPM/CPM.html Critical Path Method (CPM)] University of South Carolina, Health Services Policy and Management Courses is to construct a model of the project that includes the following: https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
6
Critical path analysis - Basic technique 1 An additional parallel path through the network with the total durations shorter than the critical path is called a sub-critical or non-critical path. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
7
Critical path analysis - Basic technique 1 CPM analysis tools allow a user to select a logical end point in a project and quickly identify its longest series of dependent activities (its longest path). These tools can display the critical path (and near critical path activities if desired) as a cascading waterfall that flows from the project's start (or current status date) to the selected logical end point. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
8
Critical path analysis - Basic technique 1 In this diagram, Activities A, B, C, D, and E comprise the critical or longest path, while Activities F, G, and H are off the critical path with floats of 15 days, 5 days, and 20 days respectively. Whereas activities that are off the critical path have float and are therefore not delaying completion of the project, those on the critical path will usually have critical path drag, i.e., they delay project completion. The drag of a critical path activity can be computed using the following formula: https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
9
Critical path analysis - Basic technique 1 # If a critical path activity has nothing in parallel, its drag is equal to its duration. Thus A and E have drags of 10 days and 20 days respectively. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
10
Critical path analysis - Basic technique 1 # If a critical path activity has another activity in parallel, its drag is equal to whichever is less: its duration or the total float of the parallel activity with the least total float https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
11
Critical path analysis - Basic technique 1 These results, including the drag computations, allow managers to prioritize activities for the effective management of project completion, and to shorten the planned critical path of a project by pruning critical path activities, by 'fast tracking' (i.e., performing more activities in parallel), and/or by 'crashing the critical path' (i.e., shortening the durations of critical path activities by adding resources). https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
12
Critical path analysis - Expansion 1 A resource-leveled schedule may include delays due to resource bottlenecks (i.e., unavailability of a resource at the required time), and may cause a previously shorter path to become the longest or most resource critical path https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
13
Critical path analysis - Expansion 1 Since project schedules change on a regular basis, CPM allows continuous monitoring of the schedule, which allows the project manager to track the critical activities, and alerts the project manager to the possibility that non-critical activities may be delayed beyond their total float, thus creating a new critical path and delaying project completion https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
14
Critical path analysis - Flexibility 1 Indeed, an important element of project postmortem analysis is the As Built Critical Path (ABCP), which analyzes the specific causes and impacts of changes between the planned schedule and eventual schedule as actually implemented. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html

Critical Path (book) 1 'Critical Path' is a book written by US author and inventor R https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
38
Critical Path (book) - Chapter 7 - Critical Path: Part One 1 Education is key to improving humanity's living conditions (p.232). The USSR tried to destabilise the US education system by inciting its students to riot (p.236). The Apollo Project had a Critical path method|critical path of two million tasks, one million of which required new technological solutions (p.248). Fuller has applied a similar project-planning approach to the saving of humanity, and has created a list of critical-path items (p.248). https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
39
Critical Path (book) - Chapter 10 - Critical Path: Part Four 1 The first task in humanity's critical path is to build a global electricity grid (p.309) https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
40
Critical Path (book) - Concepts 1 Fuller's plan to reorganise the global economy in a sustainable way also has a critical path, which is identified in the book. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
41
Critical Path (book) - Concepts 1 * 'Personal integrity.' Critical Path is part manifesto, part autobiography. Fuller admits in one place that this is egostistical (p.378), but excuses this by saying that he wants to show not just his conclusions, but also the thought processes that led to them. He believes that every person must think for himself and take as little as possible on trust (p.xi). https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
42
Critical path drag 1 'Critical path drag' is a project management metric developed by Stephen Devaux as part of the Total Project Control (TPC) approach to schedule analysis and compression William Duncan and Stephen Devaux [http://www.projectsatwork.com/content/articl es/246653.cfm Scheduling Is a Drag] Projects@Work on-line magazine in the critical path method of scheduling. It is the quantified amount of time that an activity or constraint on the critical path is adding to the project duration. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
43
Critical path drag 1 Devaux [http://www.dau.mil/pubscats/ATL%20Doc s/Jan_Feb_2012/Devaux.pdf The Drag Efficient: The Missing Quantification of Time on the Critical Path] Defense ATL magazine of the Defense Acquisition University https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
44
Critical path drag 1 In network schedules that include start-to- start (SS), finish-to-finish (FF) and start-to- finish (SF) relationships and lags, drag computation can be quite complex, often requiring either the decomposition of critical path activities into their components so as to create all relationships as finish-to-start, or the use of scheduling software that computes critical path drag with complex dependencies. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
45
Critical path drag 1 A quick way to compute the drag of a critical path activity that has one or more start-to-start or start-to-start plus lag successors https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
46
Critical path drag 1 is that the drag of the critical path activity that has such successors will be equal to whichever is less: the duration of the predecessor activity OR the sum of the lag plus total float of whichever SS successor has the LEAST lag plus total float https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
47
Critical path drag 1 If the volume of work in the first part of the activity can be performed faster, the lag to the trench-digging can shrink, decreasing the drag in the predecessor and compressing the critical path https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
48
Critical path drag 1 Critical path drag is often combined with an estimate of the increased cost and/or reduced expected value of the project due to each unit of the critical path's duration. This allows such cost to be attributed to individual critical path activities through their respective drag amounts (i.e., the activity's drag cost). If the cost of each unit of time in the diagram above is $10,000, the drag cost of E would be $200,000, B would be $150,000, A would be $100,000, and C and D $50,000 each. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
49
Critical path drag 1 This in turn can allow a project manager to justify those additional resources that will reduce the drag and drag cost of specific critical path activities where the cost of such resources would be less than the value generated by reduction in drag. For example, if the addition of $50,000 worth of resources would reduce the duration of B to ten days, the project would take only 55 days, B's drag would be reduced to five days, and its drag cost would be reduced to $50,000. https://store.theartofservice.com/the-critical-path-toolkit.html
