Warm Up

Intro to Polynomials

Definition A polynomial is a sum of terms containing the same variable raised to different powers.

What do they look like?

Important Note!!

General Equation X is a variable (could be other letters) The exponents are positive integers (not fractions).

Coefficient (numbers in front of the variables) Variable Exponent Looking at the first term…

DEFINITIONS: monomial, binomial, trinomial

Definition - Degree The degree of a polynomial is the power of the term with greatest exponent. Simply locate the term that has the greatest exponent – that is the degree.

Examples of Degree 1.8x 2 - 2x + 7 Degree is 2 2. y 7 + 6y 4 + 3y 4 Degree is 7

Find the degree of x 5 – x 3 + 4 1.0 2.2 3.3 4.5 5.10

A polynomial is normally put in ascending or descending order based on degree. What is ascending order? Going from small to big exponents. What is descending order? Going from big to small exponents.

Put in Descending Order 8x - 3x 2 + x 4 – 4 Be careful with the negatives! x 4 - 3x 2 + 8x - 4

Put in ascending order 5a 3 - 3 + 2a - a 2 -3 + 2a - a 2 + 5a 3
