A resume gets you an interview – not a job!
3
Rules of Engagement Simplicity Eliminate Red Flags One Page No logos or photos Reverse chronological order Avoid fluffy language Save references for follow up Spell Check!!!
5
Internships/Employment Be honest. Describe in detail the duties you performed. Quantify as much as possible. For example “helped resolve case issues for 153 constituents,” or “provided legislative history and policy background research into more than a dozen bills being carried by the Assembly Member’s office.”
7
“Pay the Bills” Experience Demonstrates leadership, trust responsibility. Important context to the resume. Title, one line on your responsibilities, significant promotions, achievements or results.
8
Education Degree, institution. Leadership roles, programs or certifications. Keep descriptions brief.
10
References & Gaps in Employment A line on the bottom of the resume that says “references available upon request” is sufficient. Separate document, provided when asked. Calls references ahead of time. Call former supervisors as well. It isn’t necessary to explain gaps in employment on a resume. When asked in an interview, give a short honest answer.
