2  Students will be able to distinguish the changes between Beowulf as a young man and as an old man through his battles.HOW?  Socratic Circle  Work Time

3  Why is the poem structured distinctly between Beowulf as a young man and as an old man?  Why is Geatland cursed with a dragon? What does the dragon symbolize?  What does the stolen cup symbolize?  Why does Beowulf refuse the throne the first time?  Compare the fight with the dragon to the fight with Grendel and Grendel’s mother. How are the battles similar? How are they different?  What are the important values in the poem that reflect Anglo-Saxon culture?

4  Finish the poem (through section 43) and record the dialectical journal entries for each section.  Bring a vocabulary word* for Thesaurus Thursday! *It must be a vocabulary word that you earnestly want to use in your writing and conversations. YOUR DIALECTICAL JOURNAL FOR BEOWULF IS DUE ON THURSDAY.
