3 Teaching Contents Analysis This lesson is the first one of the unit, consisting of four parts: 1. Warming up, 2. Reading and Comprehension,3.Discussion,4 Consolidation. The text is the most important teaching material in this lesson, which extends the main topic “ The Olympic Games ” and contains most of the vocabulary and grammar points that students should learn in this unit.

4 This is an interesting and familiar topic for Ss. By learning the similarities and differences between the Ancient and Modern Olympic Games, they are expected to know more about the Olympics and feel more proud of being Chinese.

5 Teaching aims 1. Train the students ’ speaking and reading ability; 2. Get students to learn something from the spirit of the Olympic Games and the athletes

Enable Ss to listen to, read, and use the new words and main sentence patterns, such as, compete, competitor, ( 1 ) I lived in what you call “ Ancient Greece ” and I used to write about the Olympic Games a long time ago. ( 2 ) It ’ s just as much a competition among countries to host the Olympics as to win an Olympic medal. b. Enable Ss to express their thoughts and talk about the Olympic Games.

7 2).Ability goals: a To develop Ss ’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing, especially their skimming and scanning ability

8 3).Emotion goals: a.By completing the task, Ss are to increase their interests in sports and learn how to share the Olympic Spirit, “ Swifter, Higher, Stronger ”. b.Teach Ss why Countries compete to host the Olympics to stimulate their love for China, thus encourage them to make great contributions to improving the international position of China in future.

Learning methods goals: a.the ability of self-learning and cooperative learning method; and use such kind of ability to gain and deal with language information. b.foster the students ’ questioning spirit to improve their ability of analyzing and solving problems. c."Observation — Imitation — Practice " (观察 — 模 仿 — 实践三步教学法) to study language.

10 Teaching important points: 1. Improve the students ’ reading ability, especially the ability to find the information needed as quickly as possible; 2. Talk about some Olympic athletes in groups and learn from them; 3. Get to know something about the ancient Olympics and modern Olympics;

Reading for information: Skimming and scanning In this step, I use Task-based Language Teaching method, which can give students a clear and specific purpose while skimming and scanning the context. Task 1 General idea Prediction is an important skill in grasping the idea of a contest. Consequently, I let the students predict the general idea before they read in this task.
