2 Models before the scientific revolution The earth was the center of the universe The earth was stationary PtolemyAristotle Ptolemy and Aristotle were responsible for popular scientific thoughts that lasted from their times throughout the Middle Ages.

3 Nicolaus Copernicus Began the Scientific Revolution Published On the Revolution of the Celestial Spheres Believed planets revolved around the sun in circular orbits Nicolaus Copernicus Observatory

4 Believed in Copernicus’s theories about the center of the universe However, he proved the orbits of the planets were oval, or elliptical, rather than round. Both Protestants and Catholics opposed his views as well.

5 Developed a more powerful telescope First person to observe sunspots, Jupiter’s moons, and Saturn’s rings Saw that our moon’s surface was not smooth

6 Galileo & the Church –Published a dialog called, Concerning the Two World Systems. This dialog was placed on the Church’s Index of Prohibited Books. –When he was threatened with torture, Galileo denied his belief in Copernicus. He later took back his denial. –Spent the last years of his life under house arrest, but he continued his investigations.

7 Protestants claimed The Bible stated the earth stood still.

8 –claimed the earth and people were at the center of the universe –Catholics also declared that these scientists and their followers were heretics –created the Index of Prohibited Books, which included Galileo’s Concerning the Two World Systems

9 Did you learn anything? How was the universe viewed before the Scientific Revolution? Who started this movement in history? How did people’s views of planetary movement change? How did Protestant and Catholic churches react?

10 How do you feel about current issues that oppose traditional thought? Consider things like cloning, genetic engineering, and the possibility of life on Mars.
