3. Nicolaus Copernicus Began the Scientific Revolution Published On the Revolution of the Celestial Spheres Believed planets revolved around the sun in circular orbits Nicolaus Copernicus Observatory

4. Believed in Copernicus’s theories about the center of the universe However, he proved the orbits of the planets were oval, or elliptical, rather than round. Both Protestants and Catholics opposed his views as well.

5. Developed a more powerful telescope First person to observe sunspots, Jupiter’s moons, and Saturn’s rings Saw that our moon’s surface was not smooth

6. Galileo & the Church –Published a dialog called, Concerning the Two World Systems. This dialog was placed on the Church’s Index of Prohibited Books. –When he was threatened with torture, Galileo denied his belief in Copernicus. He later took back his denial. –Spent the last years of his life under house arrest, but he continued his investigations.
