Roles in film making In groups of 3, come up with as many different roles in moving making as you can. Put each idea onto a separate post-it note. These ideas can be split up into three areas -Pre-Production -Production -Post-Production Come up to the board and place them under the appropriate headings.

Pre - Production The story is king Motivation Why is the story worth telling? What makes it unique? Who are you making the film for?

Elements of an effective story Hook – The beginning must have a hook so the audience wants to find out more Has structure – clear sequence with a beginning, middle and end Emotional content – The audience identifies with it because of its emotional content – eg excitement, sadness Pace – We need to keep the pace to keep the audiences attention Effective soundtrack – Soundtrack conveys emotion, mood, mood and emotion and links with the message

Story board A storyboard contains a rough sketch representation of the video. A storyboard is essentially a timeline that allows you to see what the scenes will look like.

Your pictures can be simple drawings, but you need to think carefully about the shots you are going to take and the script you are going to use.

Production Audio Identify ambient noises (noises in room) If no external microphone – do not zoom Work in close to your subject Use an external microphone if possible

How many different shots are used to make this trailer? Count them! http://www.apple.com/trailers/dreamworks/transfor mers/large_trailer.html http://www.apple.com/trailers/dreamworks/transfor mers/large_trailer.html

Top mistakes in production No time between hitting record and starting the action Camera zoom Camera shake Pans to long in duration and wide in arc Audio not given respect

The rule of thirds The rule states that an image can be divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. The four points formed by the intersections of these lines can be used to align features in photos or videos. http://www.izzyvideo.com/2008/11/20/izzy-video-110- the-rule-of-thirds-revisited/ http://www.izzyvideo.com/2008/11/20/izzy-video-110- the-rule-of-thirds-revisited/

Post production Editing More than about 10 seconds from any angle is bordering on too much. Sound effects The soundtrack/effects you choose can completely change to mood of the scene.
