**Quiz on Monday, Reminder: Brine Shrimp Lab due TOMORROW Bell Work: Thurs. 9/15 1.At least one complete sentence: What is one thing you learned from the starch test in the last class? 2.What was the name of the liquid we used in the last class to determine if a food was high in starch? (Hint: it started with an “i”) 3.What are some types of sugar you know of (Hint, all sugars end in “-ose”) 4.Draw a picture of a sugar molecule (or close approximation at least) 5.What one ingredient do all of the foods shown below have in common?

Objectives! Students will be able to: Hypothesize about the amount of sugar in common foods Investigate the sugar concentrations of foods using benedict’s solution with hot water baths Conduct the lab in a safe manner Draw conclusions about similarities between foods with high amounts of sugar

Sugars –Are small molecules –Functions: Provide quick energy Are building blocks for carbohydrates

Examples of sugar 1. Fructose: fruit sugar Lactose: milk sugar Glucose: blood sugar Sucrose table sugar

Sugar Lab Predicted Sugar Actual Sugar Carrot Potato Beans Rice Apple Cucumber Cheerio Onion Banana Corn Spaghetti Predict the Amount of Sugar 0 = no sugar + = a little sugar ++ = medium sugar +++ = lots of sugar

Sugar Lab Steps 1.Add food item to each test tube 2.Shake it down to the bottom 3.Add SMALL AMOUNT benedict’s solution 4.Put in Hot water bath for 2-3 minutes 5.Record you results 6.Clean your test tubes with brushes 7.Contents go in the blue bin, NOT THE SINK 8.Return petri dish to your lab station, and test tubes upside down cleaned

Safety Goggles! Test tubes are hot, use the test tube tongs Don’t sit on the counters

Sugar Lab Questions 1.Which foods did you notice have the most sugar? 2.Which foods had more sugar than you thought? 3.Which foods had less sugar than you thought? 4.Were there any foods that had a lot of sugar but do not taste sweet? 5.What are some other foods not in this experiment that you think would be high in sugar? 6.Answer in 2-3 sentences: What do foods with sugar have in common? (do they taste the same? Have the same color before adding the Benedict’s solution? Same texture?)
