How you can help your child to progress in reading Questions to ask your child when listening to them read These questions will help them look for and gain a deeper understanding of the text Describe what a character is feeling/thinking about at a certain part of the story. Summarise the blurb for the back of the book Evaluate the success of figurative language and imagery in the text. This means how the author describes to put an image in our heads. Jot down some words that you find hard to read or don’t understand. Look up their meanings in a dictionary. Think about the text you have just read. Explain in detailed sentences what your best part in the story has been. What is the setting of the story. Think of 5 questions you would like to ask the author and explain why you have chosen them.
