2 22  To make all secondary schools conform to common national parameters keeping in mind the norms of Kendriya Vidyalaya  Availability and access to every child  Within 5 Kms for Secondary schools  Within 7 to 10 Kms for Higher Secondary schools  Equity through removal of gender, socio-economic geographical and disability barriers  To ensure education of good quality for all students Expansion of Secondary Education: Objectives

3 3 Expansion of Secondary Education: General Strategies 1. Upgrade existing schools to achieve prescribed norms 2. Expand capacity of existing schools 3. Open new schools (mostly by upgradation) in areas with gaps 4. Encourage good quality private schools 5. Expand facilities for open and distance learning 6. Step up allocation to secondary education from 0.9% of GDP to 1.5% of GDP.

5 55 Model Schools  Prime Minister’s Independence Day, 2007 Announcement  Government to invest in setting up good quality schools across the country  6000 new high quality schools  One school per block  To set standards of excellence for other schools in the area and act as pace- setters.

7 7 ICT in Schools Each secondary and higher secondary school to have a computer lab with at least 10 PCs Internet/ Broadband connectivity ICT literacy for all students Development and use of e-content ICT-aided teaching and learning Capacity building of all teachers to use ICT in teaching ICT-related elective subjects at +2 level

8 8 Inclusive Education for Disabled Mainstreaming of disabled in all schools Inclusive education for all Special teachers for inclusive education All teachers to be trained in inclusive education Assistive devices and incentives/ facilities for the disabled

9 9 Girls’ Hostel Scheme Proposal for construction and maintenance of one girls’ hostel of capacity 100 in each EBB. Location at KGBVs/ Govt. school Assistance towards recurring cost to reputed NGOs to run girls’ hostels in backward areas.

10 10 National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship  Announced by Finance Minister in Budget Speech on 28.02.2007 to arrest dropout rate and encourage continuance beyond class VIII.  100,000 scholarships of Rs. 6000/- per annum/per student to be awarded each year from class IX to class XII.

There should be one agreed syllabus on moral extension and yoga. 3. In service training for teaching staff 4. Hostel facilities for girls to reduce the drop out.
