Try this … What do a person, a tree, a monkey, a flower, an ant, a lizard, a snake, a dinosaur, a shark, a frog, a dog, a cat, a bamboo, a snail, a crocodile, a lion, a bear, an amoeba, an algae a fish, bacteria, mushroom and a beetle have in common?

That's right !They're all made of trillions tiny … CELLS

But if all living things are made of cells, what makes each one unique?

Each living thing is UNIQUE because of the DNA but what is DNA?

DNA The Blue Print Of Life

OBJECTIVES: 1. describe the composition ans structure of the DNA molecule 2. make a simple model of the DNA molecule 3. explain the nitrogen base pairing in DNA

Activity : Making A DNA Model Pair Work Pair Work Given the following materials, Make a simple DNA model. Materials: construction paper cut outs construction paper cut outs Scissors Scissors Scotch tape Scotch tape Hard plastic strips (to be provided by the teacher) Hard plastic strips (to be provided by the teacher) Pair the base cut outs and attach these in between the two plastic strips. You will be given 2 minutes for this.

Guide Questions for the DNA Model Activity : Describe the model you have made. Describe the model you have made. How are the base pairs arranged? How are the base pairs arranged? How did you know which one should be paired with the other? How did you know which one should be paired with the other? What does the plastic strips represent? What does the plastic strips represent? If we move the DNA model sideways how does it look like? If we move the DNA model sideways how does it look like?

Deoxyribonucleic Acid Is a nucleic acid found inside the chromosomes. It is made up of two strands ( double helix ) Basic unit: nucleotides made up of : 1.Deoxyribose sugar 2.Phosphate group 3.Base

“I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

How can we make proteins out of the DNA strand, Francis ? We’ ll find that out tomorrow, James

Flow Chart Introduction Recapitulation of the Lesson Using questions and diagrams Lesson Development Making a simple DNA model which uses as a spring board to the lesson Video Clip to be used for the explanation of the topic on DNA Inquiry – based discussion Closure Summarization of the lesson using an outline diagram Preview of the next lesson on Protein Synthesis
