1 ENVIRONMENTAL SYMBOLS GCSE Textiles Revision 2011

2 Eco labelling Eco labelling guarantees certain ecological criteria for all sorts of textile items and their manufacturing processes. It identifies: –Products are environmentally safe –Manufacturing by eco- friendly material and –Avoid harmful chemicals Oekotex 100 is one of its classified standard. The EU’s flower

3 European Ecolabel This is the official European Ecolabel for non-food products that minimise their impacts on the environment. Products must be independently certified, and have to meet strict criteria for all the main environmental impacts across their whole life cycle

4 Oeko-Tex Standard 100 The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is an international certification system for textiles and clothing, covering all stages of production. Labelled products are tested by independent institutes for an extensive range of harmful substances based on the latest scientific findings and legal regulations. All parts of labelled articles must meet the defined requirements

5 Bluesign® The bluesign® standard is practice-oriented. Instead of working with bans and restrictions, the bluesign®standard provides solutions for EHS issues on all levels, from raw material and chemical components suppliers to manufacturers and retailers. The bluesign® standard is widely recognized within the complete textile production chain. To assure efficient and economical solutions, the bluesign® standard includes all levels of the manufacturing chain. It is recognized by leading chemical companies, numerous textile manufacturers as well as well-known retailer and brand companies.

6 Made in Green® Made in green is a special symbol for all those who provide or who are seeking textile products manufactured with the guarantee that they are free from substances harmful to health. This certifies that the product, throughout its traceability chain has been manufactured in factories which respect the environment and the universal rights of workers. The object, therefore is, free from harmful substances, respect for the environment and respect for human rights.

7 FAIRTRADE Fair Trade Certification empowers farmers and farm workers to lift themselves out of poverty by investing in their farms and communities, protecting the environment, and developing the business skills necessary to compete in the global marketplace.

8 Organic Exchange Organic Exchange is a 501(C)(3) charitable organization committed to expanding organic agriculture, with a specific focus on increasing the production and use of organically grown fibres such as cotton. Their long term goal is to grow the amount of certified organic land farmed for fiber production by 50% per year. Achieving this goal will produce a positive, significant, visible and measurable impact on the world.

9 MOBIUS LOOP Mobius Loop: Indicates that an object is capable of being recycled - not that it has been recycled.

10 Mobius Loop with percentage Mobius Loop with percentage: This label shows the percentage of recycled material contained in the product.
