TDC2-TCC2 consolidation status report to RSSO EDMS 1422345 October 14 th, 2014 E. Harrouch, Q. Bouirek, EN-MEF, on behalf of the TDC2/TCC2 WG

Outline  Objectives and schedule  Completed activities  Dosimetry analysis  Conclusions RSSO meeting

Objectives Reduce corrosion of vacuum equipment Replace PVC-insulated cables Re-route cable trays and cables Eradicate water leaks Upgrade ventilation Reduce machine downtime Replace damaged equipment (TCSC, ion pumps, beam instrumentation) Replace obsolete low voltage equipment Install radiation resistant equipment Apply ALARA principle Reduce maintenance time Increase Mean Time Between Failures RSSO meeting

2014 Schedule RSSO meeting L3 ALARA Committee agreement in October 2013. EDMS 1317027 L3 ALARA Committee agreement on May 20th for EN/EL activities. EDMS1377072

Outline  Objectives and schedule  Completed activities  Dosimetry analysis  Conclusions RSSO meeting

Removal of hot equipment TCSC removed first and brought to B.955 3 splitter2 magnets and 2 MDLV removed and stored in TDC2 Various beam monitors, BLM and vacuum beam pipes RSSO Meeting

Cooling and ventilation upgrades RSSO meeting  New chilled water pipes (200 m DN 200)  New cooling coils in all AHU’s  AHU cabinet (40 years old) quite in good shape  Demineralized water circuit: 20 new valves  Challenge: asbestos removal

Civil Engineering RSSO meeting Repair of the TDC2 roof joints: 3 joints have been fitted with a metallic gutter driving water and bitumen to 3 retention boxes. Repair of the mezzanine floor: Resin flooring

Civil Engineering: drain network maintenance RSSO meeting Contractor Vallier checked all the manholes and inspection chambers High pressure cleaning Cleaning water collected and RP checked before disposal Sludge treated as radioactive waste

Civil Engineering: various repairs RSSO meeting New, extension of, repair to water collecting gutters Exchange of all remaining PVC pipes by PE pipes New drain connection

Heavy handling equipment RSSO meeting PR544 maintenance and test Power supply rail (feeding TT20 for transport vehicles) has been removed from TDC2

Magnet upgrade RSSO meeting  One manifold dismounted in order to estimate time needed for future exchange  Cooling flexible replacement completed in TDC2 (joints replaced)  About 120 seals exchanged

Magnet upgrade  Splitter rails and vacuum tank RSSO Meeting

Cabling activities Re-routing of 5 Cable trays (5x40m) Replacement of 70 DC and 42 control cables Installation of 10 new cables (new requests) Gangway Average 100µSv/h. Max: 500µSv/h Courtesy of I. Moya RSSO meeting

Cabling activities Control  Power  General services  New situation RSSO meeting

Replacement of emergency and conventional light fittings Total 66 emergency light fittings (Not compliant with current standards) Total 338 conventional light fittings Replacement of AUG buttons Replacement of power distribution outlets Installation of cable distribution for vacuum pump heaters Emergency radiation resistant LED light fitting High Power LEDs hung from walkway TCC2 TDC2 Conventional light fittings Low voltage activities Courtesy of J. Devine RSSO meeting

Target refurbishment Preparation in EHN1 cleanroom: Production of new monitors and target boxes for target stations T2, T4, T6 & T10 + spare survey and vacuum & motorisation tests Courtesy of D.Grenier RSSO Meeting

T2, T4 and T6 target refurbishment In TCC2: Proximity cabling has been renovated Old monitors and target boxes remotely removed Dedicated shielded container for long term storage in B. 954 and 955. Re-installation of new monitors and target boxes currently in progress Courtesy of D.Grenier RSSO Meeting

Upgrade of 12 XTAX tables: Removal of spiral springs (screw protection) Jacks greasing Functional test of each tables Cleaning and maintenance of the base plates Realignment of XTAX4 XTAX table upgrade RSSO Meeting

Vacuum consolidation New beam pipes (100m) New ion pumps (10 units) Heated collars Vacuum consolidation RSSO Meeting

New TCSC collimator New beam instrumentation A few new units Maintenance of 40 beam instruments Collimator & beam instrumentation RSSO Meeting

Outline  Objectives and schedule  Completed activities  Dosimetry analysis  Conclusions RSSO meeting

Dosimetry analysis Dose breakdown by activity Accuracy of the estimate dose Dose breakdown by week Wish for the temporal breakdown Dose cost for free time Dose sharing between workers RSSO meeting

Estimate / Integrate dose RSSO meeting

Estimate / Integrate dose RSSO meeting

Estimate / Integrate dose Over estimate time and/or dose rate MSSB 460, 450 and 441 Removal In this case, incorrect estimate of dose rate RSSO meeting EstimateReal MagnetsTimeDoseTimeDose MSSB 220460803037284 MSSB 220450803035592 MSSB 2204418030367167 Total240909194343 Ratio 81%38%

Temporal dose distribution Radioactive decay : more waiting = less dose Handle highly activated equipment as late as possible (targets, XTAX,…) RSSO meeting

Temporal dose distribution RSSO meeting Cumulative dose TDC2 TCC2

Temporal dose distribution RSSO meeting ■ Real dose ■ Handle highly activated first The worst way to do … Dose is multiplied by 2

Keep a margin ? RSSO meeting Impact of two additional weeks before NA start up ?

Keep a margin ? What about the dose ? RSSO meeting 7% increase in dose for 15 days

Dose sharing RSSO meeting

Outline  Objectives and schedule  Completed activities  Dosimetry analysis  Conclusions RSSO meeting

Conclusions  The TDC2/TCC2 consolidation activities have been successfully completed, within schedule, budget and without major problems.  The corrective and preventive maintenance will reduce corrosion of the vacuum equipment and reduce machine downtime in the future operation of the beam lines.  The strategy defined in the preparatory ALARA committees has proven to be very successful (decay time, planning optimization, staff training, remote control operation, 360° movie)  However, individual dose management has been very challenging for some groups. Especially for experts (vacuum, targets, survey)  resource management to improve (competition with other LS1 activities)  Proposal: use a x-factor in future similar interventions. RSSO meeting
