3 “Is this a time for airy persiflage?” Ko-Ko urgently exclaims late in Act II. The real world is such a long way from the quaint and quirky town of Titipu, do we have the luxury of making this journey today? Few writers give us such clever (and silly) lyrics or soaring melodies, few projects demand the best creative efforts of such a committed and gifted team of singers, actors, dancers, musicians, artists, designers and technicians and even fewer are the opportunities we have to stop, relax and revel in the simple beauty of song and story. “Is this a time for airy persiflage?” Yes. For a few delightful hours, it might be just the respite we need to prepare and refresh us to go back and do what needs doing way beyond Titipu! Jeffrey S. 4 W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan formed one of the most famous and successful of all creative partnerships. Though each aspired to great things in his own field, it is as GILBERT & SULLIVAN that they are remembered so well; their fourteen comic operas (including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado) have never fallen out of favor and helped establish the rich musical theater tradition of the 20 th century that followed. 5 Premiered in 1885, The Mikado is set in an imperial Japan that reveals the European colonial fascination with the Far East; but the exotic setting is really just a background for a satirical look at the absurdities of British society, especially the inefficiencies and social inequities that are the inevitable product of a land overrun by ridiculous laws and mystifying bureaucratic processes. 6 The story hinges on Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado of Japan, who doesn’t want to marry the terrifying Katisha to whom he’s been promised by his father, a ruler more interested in the amusing peculiarities of the law than in their horrifying consequences. Nanki-Poo, who’s fled his father’s court and disguised himself as a wandering minstrel, is really in love with Yum-Yum, a young woman who’s obligated to marry her guardian, Ko-Ko. Though absurdly unqualified, Ko- Ko holds the post of Lord High Executioner, which puts a variety of people (including himself) in comically awkward positions.
