Common Core Standards UMath X For PGCPS An Introduction

Steps in an Introduction ●Introductory Flyer - link is below ●Guidelines for PGCPS District UMath X Initiative - slides 3, 4 ●Model Digital Learning - slides 5 to 12 ●Model Blended Learning - slides 13 to 16 ●Model “Smarter, Not Harder” RTI - slides 17 to 21 ●Model -in K to 5 Curriculum - slides 22 to 24 -in 6 to alg1 Curriculum - slides 25 to 27 ●Assessment - slides 28, 29 ●Summary - 30 to 38 http://www.neufeldlearning.com/files/UMathX-BlendedLearning-ChangingTheClassroom.pdf

Guidelines for District UMath X Initiative ● The district math leadership approaches Principals of 30 elem schools with guidelines below. ●30 selected UMath X Coaches, gr 5 teachers, come to a district training Sept 10/15 and agree to use UMath X with fidelity as discussed. ●Initially only a UMath X Coach and one of his/her classes is registered. When the coach feels comfortable, then he/she will notify UMath X Support by registering more of his/her classes. ●It is suggested that coaches begin to use UMath X with a whole class lesson before involving more computer stations and differentiated instruction. ●Coach agrees to access UMath X in at least 3(three) 20 to 40 min sessions per class per week. ●Principal will provide each teacher with at least 5 computers with good internet access to provide for opportunity for differentiated instruction in small groups and 1 computer to be used with a projector and screen to provide a setting for a whole group lesson. ●When the math coach feels comfortable with using UMath X with his/her own classes, then he/she may invite other teachers in the school to begin to implement UMath X in their classes.

Guidelines for District UMath X Initiative (cont’d) ● Opening UMath X invitations to other teachers and their classes should not occur before Oct 1. With this in mind, on Oct 1, the K to 3 UMath X menu will be released to the PGCPS URL. ● Also on Oct 1, a new wizard for a friendlier introduction to UMath X will be released under START. ●In the first full week of October, Custom Tests will be released for Quarters and Units of the PGCPS Gr 5 Cluster Map. At the same time, random tests for all grades 3 to algebra 1, will be released for all domains within the Common Core. ●Teachers will give pre and post tests from within UMath X. In this way, growth can be shown. ●After October 1, supervisors and teachers will be given access to a data module which will provide information such as useage and test results of individuals, classes and schools.. ●When a UMath X coach feels that a teacher is ready to use UMath X, then that teacher will be provided with template to provide teacher and student information to support@neufeldmath.com.support@neufeldmath.com ●In the interest of efficiency, classes will only be added to the UMath X roster bimonthly.

Model Digital Learning ●is the 10 th version of “Understanding Math”. ●blends a digital approach and resources aligned to many curricula for k to algebra 1. ●models strategies in scaffolded learning environments: - to build the math capacity of students. - to provide individual progress monitoring. - to support the professional learning of the teacher.

Frameworks for Learning ● 3 Part Lessons ● Start - Work at it - Reflect Digital Learning Principles ●Concrete to Pictorial to Abstract ●multiple representations ●interactivity and audio ●mistake is an opportunity to learn ●pacing is controlled by the learner ●learning is scaffolded Use any browser & Key in the URL www.neufeldlearning.com Play the NLS Video - UMath X Navigational Tutorial

For a GLIMPSE, now LOG into UMath X Use any browser & Key in the URL … www.neufeldlearning.com/pgcps Login is … firstname lastname (lowercase with a space between) Password is … umathx (the owner can change this) UMath X recognizes a teacher vs student.

Then try other paths: Counting - 6) Recognize and Count Solids Operations - 23) Subtract 3 Digit Numbers Concretely - D - 4) Subtraction with Regrouping #3 Operations - 27) Introduce Multiplication Facts … 2, 3, 4, 5 Graphing - Slope of a Line - Similar Triangles Try this path & note the Digital Learning Principles on Slide 6

The UMath X Menu is converted into the CCSS Menu. The UMath X menu is based on a CONCEPTUAL FOCUS. It allows student and teacher to follow a CONCEPTUAL PATH rather than an often disjointed grade focus. It is flexible in that one can focus on concepts in a certain grade and conceptual scaffolding over a number of grade levels. Then navigate to 5.NF.02.04a in CC Menu

More Examples of Items within CC Menu and corresponding UMath X Paths. K.OA.01.05 Operations - 5.) Demonstrate Addition Facts - Making 5 2.OA.02.02 Operations - 12.) Add 3 or 4 Numbers - A - 1. 31 Change the Mindset Remember How Understand Why..to..

Watch Less. Do More! Instructional Paradigm Shift

“Active learning practices have a more significant impact on student performance than any other variable. Dr. Brigid Barron and Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond, Stanford University Teaching for Meaningful Learning: A Review of Research on Inquiry-Based and Cooperative Learning

Good Mathematics... … is what you do when you don’t know answers. ●more than “persevering” ●more than “engaging” ●is “productive” struggling … is … “GRAPPLING” ie … in competition with oneself.

Show me another way? Effective Questions Productive Math Talk Moves How are these same/different? What would you do if…? Why did you…? What else could you have done? Revoicing Repeating Reasoning Adding On Waiting Students articulate their own ideas and consider peer perspectives as a way to construct understandings.

Parent Expectations Go Deep to Understand Unpack the Math Teach in New Ways Lead to Understand Broad Ability Ranges Differentiate The Teacher is the KEY

Role of the School Leader Support Teachers Teach for Understanding Answers are Important but Not Sufficient Communicate with Parents Teachers do not provide all answers. Students are encouraged to “Grapple”
