Cloud Computing Changing the way business computing is (will be) done. http://www.mkpress.com/PowerInTheCloud.html http://www.mkpress.com/PowerInTheCloud.html Cloud computing: resources and applications hosted remotely as a shared service over the Internet (the Internet represents the Cloud). –The Internet is the platform for computing. Rather than running software on a local computer or server, Internet users reach to the “cloud” to combine software applications, data storage and massive computing power. –Applications run off of Internet servers. –Data is stored on Internet servers Google is probably the most recognized leader in cloud computing. Follows the “software as a service” model: the application is licensed to customers as a service on demand, using a pay-as-you- go model or subscription model (like monthly subscription)

Benefits of Cloud Computing Lower total cost of ownership –Reduced hardware and software costs –Someone else maintains the systems for you, you don’t have upfront costs –Someone else provides the hardware, software, training, support services, help desk, trouble shooting, security and upgrades Easy to switch to another provider if you are unhappy Pay only for what you use. Quick access to new upgrades (and upgrades happen on the server, rather than on the end-user desktops) –Interface to applications is typically through a web browser (IE, FireFox, Safari, etc.) What is Cloud Computing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae_DKNwK_ms&feature=player_embeddedWhat is Cloud Computing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae_DKNwK_ms&feature=player_embedded
