Evaluation question 4 Who wold be the audience for your Media Product?
2
Core Audience Because most thrillers are rated 15-18’s the target audience does start at 15. Sometimes thrillers are 12’s but because thrillers do usually involve a lot of graphic violence which some young viewers aren’t suitable to watch. Also they can involve a lot of swearing and possible sexual nature. These are usually above the rating of a 15 but if its not frequent it can be rated a 15. Gender wise both Men and Women enjoy thrillers, they each have similar and different aspects that they enjoy from thriller films. The Target audience would be starting from young so around 15 – 30 year olds and then from middle age so 30-50 year olds, I think typically enjoy thriller films the most. Reason being that I think older people will not enjoy these type of genre of films, they might even find it offensive. I think our film will appeal to most people maybe the younger audience will prefer it more so from the ages 15-30 because a lot of the characters are also quite young, as well as using modern technology and phrases for example twitter and Facebook. I think an older audience can also enjoy it because thriller appeals to everyone but they might just think of it as average as opposed to films like Se7en. I think our thriller has appeal to a male and female audience but for different reasons, generally males like the violence and action where as females like more of the mystery and crime. Girls might also be interested if there is an attractive male lead in the film. I would give our film a rating of 15 because I think people raging from the age 15 and above will be more interested in this film and would understand more than a 12 year old would. As well as that it also involves crime and violence.

Evaluation question 5 How did you attract your audience?
5
Part A Marketing Tools Most thriller films can attract a wide rand of audiences, I feel Hoodwink can do that as well but would attract maybe more younger viewers rather than older, it also would be easier to reach to the audience through marketing with younger viewers between the ages of 15-34. We would reach the audience by using pull and push advertising. With pull advertising we would you things like social media so create twitter and or Facebook pages talking about the film, with this people can share the pages on Facebook so there friends will see it and with twitter people can follow and retweet which would appear on other people’s timelines, this would be a massive part of advertising seeing at the majority of 15-34 year olds have twitter or Facebook or both. Push advertising would be things such as posters in shops such as HMV or posters at bus stops, other push advertising could be billboards around cities and on the side of buses. We could also show the trailer in-between shows that the audience we are trying to reach are watching E.G Misfits.

Casting actors such as Leonardo dicaprio would be a good option as he has played roles in thriller films before in ‘Shutter Island’ and inception, so people who enjoyed him that could be interested in our film. Another actor we could have would be Joseph Gordon Levitt, he’s had roles in thrillers like starring as the lead the independent film ‘Brick’, ‘Inception’ and has just recently been in ‘Looper’ so is an up and coming lead role for these type of films. He also has a wide fan base which includes female fans so that could get more people to watch the film also. Unique selling points could be on the posters a line like “biggest twist you will ever witness” due to our plot twist it could get people intrigued. Also if we did have actors such as Leonardo dicaprio we could have “Starring multiple Oscar nominee Leonardo Dicaprio”, he has been in very successful so with him in our film would pull in a wide range of audiences.

In order to gauge how our opening title sequence addressed our target audience, we showed out film to our target audience and received the following feedback: Part B

Genre In terms of genre our target audience said multiple times that the fact we had hidden the identity of both characters conformed well to the genre conventions of thriller because it adds mystery and suspense. The fact the narrative was of a kidnapping was also included saying it fit well with the thriller genre as it sets the narrative up and adds mystery as to who she is and why she got taken. The dark lighting was also said to be good because usually thriller films have darker lightening to set a more eerie atmosphere. The radio report was also said to be good because it makes the audience want to work out what is exactly going on.

Mise-en-Scene (Costume & Makeup, props & décor, locations, figure expression, lighting) Affective mise-en-scene used was said to be the props, it helped make the characters more believable, good in identifying each characters motives and were clearly plot devices. Things like the close up of the police badge adds to the character and gives clues into what he is involved in. The close up of the bag was said to be good because it adds mystery as to why the bag is important and is a clear indicator that it is important to the storyline. It was also said the props and décor were really good they were quite natural and something you could use every day. The costumes were said to be good gives two clear different representations of the characters, the smart shirt and tie shows he is in working class maybe a more high up job than usual. The black hoodie on the antagonist indicates he doesn’t want his identity shown and wants to stay hidden. The locations where clearly divided for the figure expressions for both character and it changed well in role of the antagonist/protagonist. It was also said to be good the locations because it sets the scene of rural surroundings with everyday life in the film.
10
Technical Aspects Cinematography wise it was said the editing was good because it flows nicely and you do not notice it which is typical for thriller films – good continuity. The titles and title placement followed well with the music and action and did not over power the shot. The graphic matches of the girl on the bench from the picture on the fridge as well as the bag worked well because it hints that these two things are important to the story line. The desaturation in the flashbacks creates a good distinction between different times and places. Voice over sets the story up and gives the audience some information but not enough for them to know what is going on. The music went well with the O.T.S it makes it more dramatic and fits with what is going on in the scenes. The change of music at the end to signal it was an important moment was good as it made the opening title sequence more exciting. The music speeding up towards the end signals that it is building up to something big.
