3 Eisenhower’s New Look Eisenhower wanted “more bang for the buck” in the military. He emphasized a smaller Army and a larger Nuclear arsenal.

17 U-2 incident The United States sent the U-2 spy plane over the Soviet Union. The Soviets shot down the U-2 and captured pilot Francis Gary Powers.

20 Cold War: Space Race Quotes From the Washington Post (Jan. 28 th 1958) The Air Force’s top space expert predicted yesterday the moon will be a military rocket base for either Russia or the US within 10 years.
