+ Research Methods CYPA AP Psychology Review Session 2

+ Learning Objectives Research Methods

+ Experiment: Test in a controlled environment Strengths: Clear cause and effect, controlled Weaknesses: artificial (because of manipulation), studied in lab

+ Correlation: Test relationship Strength: Demonstrates relationship Weakness: Little to no control, cause and effect not determined, participant biases

+ Survey Research Ask Representative Population Strengths: Supplies information about large populations Weakness: representative sample may not be accurate; little to no control; cause and effect not determined; participant biases

+ Naturalistic Observation Strengths: good for forming initial hypothesis; little preparation needed Weaknesses: No control; behavior may be altered by presence of observer, biased, no proof, not applicable to large populations

+ Case Studies Study special case, hard to find Strengths: Might be a very rare condition and so cannot study using quantitative methods; good for building hypotheses. Weaknesses: Rare, not repeatable, no solid proof

Predict the validity of behavioral explanations based on the quality of research design (e.g., confounding variables limit confidence in research conclusions).

+ Drawing Conclusions Sampling Representative sample Stratified sample Variables Controlled Confounding Causation versus correlation Blind Single Double Statistics Descriptive Inferential

Identify independent, dependent, confounding, and control variables in experimental designs.

Distinguish between random assignment of participants to conditions in experiments and random selection of participants, primarily in correlational studies and surveys.

Distinguish the purposes of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.

Apply basic descriptive statistical concepts, including interpreting and constructing graphs and calculating simple descriptive statistics (e.g., measures of central tendency, standard deviation).

Discuss the value of reliance on operational definitions and measurement in behavioral research.

Identify how ethical issues inform and constrain research practices. Describe how ethical and legal guidelines (e.g., those provided by the American Psychological Association, federal regulations, local institutional review boards) protect research participants and promote sound ethical practice.

+ HOMEWORK (Like Nike says, Just do it) -Review Quizlet -Review textbook, Barron’s, your notes, etc. -Finish Practice Multiple Choice Quizzes -Email me with ANY questions!!
