Challenge: Catalyzing Community Change in Biology Education “This is how we will lead the world in new discoveries in this new century. But I think all of you understand it will take far more than the work of government. It will take all of us. It will take all of you. And so today I want to challenge you to use your love and knowledge of science to spark the same sense of wonder and excitement in a new generation.” President Barack Obama National Academy of Sciences 146 th Annual Meeting, Washington DC, April 27, 2009

Leveraging Existing Centers We have begun exploring ways to leverage existing BIO centers. Challenging them to conceive of creative ways of increasing the undergraduate experiences at their centers. Coordinated in the larger sense by sharing successes and experiences, with room for individual centers to be flexible in their approaches.

RCN-UBE Incubators Dear Colleague Letter: Incubator Proposal Opportunity for Research Coordination Networks - Undergraduate Biology Education (RCN-UBE). Encourage and foster interactions between already active groups; aim is increasing coordination of efforts and leveraging of resources. Began in 2008, for the second round the 'incubation' component was added with a DCL this year, allowing teams to begin forming with $50K grants. Expectation that some of he RCN-UBE awards will eventually lead to CCLI proposals. Proposal Target Date: July 23, 2009 Proposal Target Date: July 5, 2010

CCLI: Transforming Undergraduate Education Type II$600,000 for 2 to 4 years. Type IIInegotiable, < $5,000,000 over 5 years. Central Resource projects - negotiable. Projects sustain a community of practice engaged in transforming undergraduate STEM education. Next Deadline for Type II, III and Central Resource proposals: January 13, 2010
9
STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) Increase recruitment, retention, and graduation of STEM majors. Type 1 grants are at the institutional level. Type 2 awards support research on persistence to degree.
10
STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) Program may also support Center awards that address major issues in undergraduate STEM education, or that disseminate common models or elements that have proven successful. Centers are jointly funded by EHR and disciplinary directorate. Watch for an announcement in FY2010.
