3.4 Using Equations to Solve Problems Objective: To use the five-step plan to solve word problems. Warm – up: Six less than five times a number is 74. Find the number. Find four consecutive even integers whose sum is 100.

3.4 Using Equations to Solve Problems Plan for Solving a Word Problem Step 1: Read the problem carefully Step 2: Choose a variable and use it with the given facts to represent the unknowns Step 3: Reread the problem and write an equation that represents the given situation Step 4: Solve the equation to find the unknowns asked for Step 5: Check your results and answer the problem (in a sentence!!) Practice!! The longest side of a triangle is 3 more than twice the shortest side, and the remaining side is 2.4 cm. Find the lengths if the perimeter is 12 cm.

3.4 Using Equations to Solve Problems Larry’s Sandwich Shop sold 520 sandwiches yesterday. The number sold with lettuce and tomato was twice the number sold without. How many of each kind were sold? Sally took a taxicab from her office to the airport. She had too pay a flat fee of $2.00 plus $0.75 per mile. The total cost was $6.50. How many miles was the taxi trip?

3.4 Using Equations to Solve Problems The perimeter of a rectangle is 332 cm and the width is 76 cm. Find the rectangles length. In any triangle, the sum of the measures of the angles is 180⁰. In triangle ∆ABC, <A is three times as large as <B and <B also 16⁰ larger than <C. Find the measure of each angle.

3.4 Using Equations to Solve Problems Finish #8 – 10 on the Word Problem Worksheet from 3.4 (this will be turned in!) Pg. 113 #2 – 10 even, 13, 17, 21
