16 The Sea Around Us Rachel Carson May 27 th, 1907-April 14 th, 1964 Alternative fall break was a celebration of her 100 th birthday and the accomplishments she made in her lifetime.

17 Impact of Going Coastal By actually getting our “hands dirty” and seeing first-hand the array of garbage in the marsh, we realized the difference just a few hours of clean-up with just a small group can actually do for the environment. 40+ bags of trash accumulated in just under two hours. Soda cans, fireworks, wrappers, oyster netting, a flip flop, just to name a few. Some good came out of it: A baby terrapin turtle caught in the netting was released! ‘Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts”- Rachel Carson
