2 modernism Time: 1880 - 1940 Modernism describes a series of reforming cultural movements in art and architecture, music, literature and the applied arts which emerged roughly in the period of 1884-1914 More generally: a term used to describe a culture made by science and technology

3 Characteristics of modernism Social structure: Researches order and equilibrium Social roles: Dichotomized roles in society Subjectivity: Centered subject Discourse: neutral (signifier plus signified equals understanding) Knowledge: Truth centered on logos Causality: based on certainty and determinacy Space & Time: Newtonian mechanics and Cartesian system
