7 Bangladeshi cuisine is rich and varied with the use of many spices. We have delicious and appetizing food, snacks, and sweets.

8 Boiled rice is our staple food. It is served with a variety of vegetables, curry, lentil soups, fish and meat.

9 Fish is the main source of protein. Fishes are now cultivated in ponds. Also we have fresh-water fishes in the lakes and rivers.

10 There are more than 40 types of fishes common in Bangladesh. How many kinds of common fishes are there in Bangladesh?

11 Some of them are carp, rui, katla, magur (catfish), chingri (prawn or shrimp).

12 Shutki or dried fishes are popular. Hilsa is very popular among the people of Bangladesh.

13 Panta ilish is a traditional platter of Panta bhat. It is steamed rice soaked in water and served with fried hilsha slice, often together with dried fish, pickles, lentil soup, green chilies and onion.

14 When do people like it most? People like it most on the Pahela Boishakh.

15 The people of Bangladesh are very fond of sweets.

16 'Pitha, a type of sweets made from rice flour, sugar syrup molasses and sometimes milk, is a traditional food loved by the entire population.

17 During winter Pitha Utsab, meaning pitha festival is organized by different groups of people.

18 Sweets are distributed among close relatives when there is good news like births, weddings, promotions etc.

19 Group Work Make a list of food you eat at home and outside home. Write down the name of very common fishes in Bangladesh and their tastes.

20 Evaluation Answer the following questions: a)How are Bangladeshi Food? b)What is our staple food? c)How is our staple food served? d)What has made Bangladeshi food special? e)Where do we get the fish from?

21 Home Work Write a paragraph on “ The food and food habits of Bangladesh”

22 Verse Eat fresh food and enjoy happy life.
