3 The Tower of London The Tower has been part of the capital’s history for the past 900 years. The fortress first built by William the Conqueror as a citadel, royal palace, seat of the government. The Tower now protects the Crown Jewels.

4 St Paul’s Cathedral St Paul’s Cathedral is the spiritual centre of the City. It was first built in 1666. The present building is the fifth cathedral to built built on the site. The architect of the baroque-style building was Sir Christopher Wren. St Paul’s Cathedral `is a fitting final place for many of the nation’s heroes.

5 Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is the popular place for political rallies and meetings. The Admiral Lord Nelson’s statue surveys the memorial to his great naval victory in 1805. The Admiral’s statue looks towards the House of Parliament. To the other side of the column are fountains.

6 Westminster Abbey Westminster Abbey has been closely connected with the Crown over 900 years. The Abbey was rebuilt in the 11 th century by a king Edward the Confessor. The Abbey contains monuments to monarchs. It is the meeting place for Parliament from the 14 th to the 16 th centuries.

7 Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the best known royal palace in the world. It was build in 1703. When Her Majesty the Queen is in the residence, the Royal Standard flutters over the east front. The palace is open to public in August and September.

8 Piccadilly Piccadilly is the centre of entertainment. It is the meeting point of six streets. Here you can find the most expensive shops, restaurants and entertainment places. This centre was created in 1980s.

9 BRITISH TRADITIONS Every country has its own traditions and customs. In Britain traditions play a very important role in the life of people. 10 Britain is full of culture and traditions which have been around for hundreds of years. IIIIt is known that the English are stay-at- home people. “There is no place like home”, they say. When they don't work they like to spend their days off at home with their families.

11 English people like domestic animals. Every family has a pet: a dog, a cat or a bird.

12 Politeness is a characteristic feature of Englishmen. They often say “Thank you”, “Sorry”, “Beg your pardon”.

13 Englishmen's home People all over the world know the saying: “The Englishmen’s home is his castle”. They like to live in small houses with a small garden. A typical feature of an English house is a fireplace, that's why many of them prefer the open fire to central heating.

14 English meals  They say that English people keep to their traditions even in meals.  They eat eggs and bacon with toasts for breakfast, pudding or apple pie for dessert.  Porridge is the dish Englishmen are very fond of. Many of them eat porridge with milk and sugar for breakfast.

15 Tea-drinkers The English are tea- drinkers. They have it many times a day. Some Englishmen have tea for breakfast, tea in lunch time, tea after dinner, tea at tea-time and tea with supper. 18 The queen's telegram  The Queen “s telegram is not a very old custom but it is for very old people.  Every British person gets a telegram from the Queen on their one-hundredth birthday

19 Changing of the Guards  Changing of the Guards is a very beautiful tradition.  Every morning tourists go to watch the ceremony at Buckingham Palace. At 11.30 the guard that stands in front of the palace change.

21 Well, on this day in England families usually have pancakes for dinner. At schools the children and teachers have pancakes for school dinner, and in restaurants customers ask for pancakes, too. Pancake Day is a funny custom. It is famous for an unusual race with frying pans and pancakes.
