4 Achievements

5 ADVOCACY AND POLICY DEVELOPMENT Six toolkits designed for Health workers, Faith Based Organisations, Private Sector, Tourism Sector, Educators, and PLHIV have been developed. These toolkits are aimed at reducing stigma and discrimination against vulnerable groups. The toolkits were validated at a validation workshop convened 12-13, October 2009 in Trinidad and Tobago. A training workshop for facilitators was held 23-24 November 2009.

6 PREVENTION OF HIV TRANSMISSION  A recall session was held for eight (8) trainers of HIV peer educators at UWI, Mona Campus.  Thirty-six (36) members of the Social Workers Students Association (SWSA) at the UWI, Mona Campus completed a 3-day training programme on HIV and AIDS. The training was conducted on December 16-18, 2009.

7 PREVENTION OF HIV TRANSMISSION (Cont ’ d)  At the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados, a study entitled “Sexuality, Risk and Vulnerability among University Students in Barbados” was conducted.  A regional capacity building workshop for leaders within the sex work community was convened on 17 – 20 November 2009 in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

8 PREVENTION OF HIV TRANSMISSION(cont ’ d) A meeting/workshop to discuss Vulnerable Populations was convened in Dominican Republic (DR) on October 7- 10, 2009. Seventy one (71) representatives from Most at risk populations (MARP), health care providers, NGOs, CBOs and development and cooperation agencies attended. Priority actions to be taken at country and regional level to reduce barriers and enhance the quality, accessibility, utilization and outcome of HIV-related health services for MSM, transgender, sex workers, prison inmates, and drug users in the Caribbean were identified.

9 STRENGTHENING LABORATORY SERVICES TO SUPPORT SCALING – UP TREATMENT AND CARE  An assessment of the Laboratory testing services in support of HIV/STI/TB and OIs in the Bahamas was conducted Nov 9-19, 2009. Specific laboratory activities included the identification of services provided, quality assurance issues, gaps, human capacity and other resources required for enhancement to support decentralization and integration of HIV related services into the health system.

10 STRENGTHENING REGIONAL RESPONSE CAPACITY  Support was provided for a meeting of the Priority Areas Coordinating Committee (PACC) which was convened 26-27 November, 2009 in Barbados.  Regional Initiative for the Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV and Congenital Syphilis was launched at the Caucus of Ministers of Health in Washington DC, 26-27 September 2009.  A similar launching ceremony to cover a wider audience took place at the PANCAP Annual General Meeting (AGM), October 29, 2009 in Grenada.

11 STRENGTHENING REGIONAL RESPONSE CAPACITY,  An exchange visit which seeks to strengthen collaboration between Suriname and Belize for the implementation of the initiative in elimination of vertical transmission of syphilis took place in Suriname 16-19 November 2009.

16 CHALLENGES 1. Lack of funds to implement activities 2. PHCO has not received funds from the World Bank under the Blanket Withdrawal modality 3. UNAIDS has not signed the MOU and consequently no funds were disbursed during the reporting period

17 ACTION REQUIRED THE MEETING is invited to: 1. Note the achievements in project implementation 2. Also note the challenges encountered 3. Provide guidance on actions that may be taken to ensure effective project implementation
