Inspiration: Where did he get the idea for Holes? Louis Sachar started writing about Camp Greenlake and it developed from there. When he graduated 1n 1976 he decided to try to write my first children's book, which was Sideways Stories From Wayside School. All the kids at Wayside School were based on the kids he knew at Hillside. His dad worked on the 78th floor of the Empire State Building, so that could have inspired Wayside School.

A few of his favorite authors are: E. B. White, E.L. Doctorow Margaret Atwood, and J.D. Salinger. The book Holes has sold more than 8 million copies! Interesting Facts Louis decided to study the law, and in the 1980s he did part-time legal work as well as continuing to write books for children. In 1989 he became a full- time writer
