4 M ATERIALS AND METHODS 1 Type of study : cross-sectional Target population : school- aged children 6-14 years of age Sample: 1168 children from 8 rural and urban school institutions from Tg. Mures County 4

11 The worldwide prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity increased from 4.2% in 1990 to 6.7% in 2010. This trend is expected to reach 9.1% or ’60 million, in 2020 2trend In 2010, 43 million children (35 million in developing countries) were estimated to be overweight and obese; 92 million were at risk of overweight 2 Countries with the highest prevalences of overweight are located mainly in the Middle East, North Africa, and Latin America 1 In terms of prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescents, up to 33% of boys and 19% of girls among 11-year-olds were overweight 3 11 D ISCUSIONS :

12 Obesity is a serious public heath problem whose prevalence has increased nowadays. There is a real difference between various anthropometric standards used for weight evaluation In order to obtain accurate data for our population we need to develop and implement our own standards.
