5 Purpose of CCHIT – Mission and Goal To accelerate the adoption of health information technology by creating an efficient, credible, and sustainable certification program To develop, create prototypes for, and evaluate the certification criteria and inspection process for EHRs

6 Background of CCHIT - History Originally established in July 2004 Founded by: –American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) –Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) –The National Alliance for Health Information Technology (The Alliance) HHS awarded contract in October 2005 Transitioning to a self-sustaining model

7 Progress of CCHIT – Certification Criteria for Health IT Systems Established Functionality –Ensuring that the systems can support the activities and perform the functions for which they are intended Security –Ensuring that systems can protect and maintain the confidentiality of data entrusted to them Interoperability –Ensuring that systems can connect to and exchange information with other systems
