1 Chapter 12 Troubleshooting Internet Connectivity Prepared by: Khurram N. Shamsi

2 What is Internet? Internet is a global network spread throughout the world. It is also called network of networks as more than 40 million networks are connected with the Internet.

3 Requirements to set up Internet on a PC Computer (laptop, desktop, tablet PC) Communication media MODEM Network Interface Card (NIC) (LAN card or Ethernet card) Switching Devices (switches, HUBS) Software (TCP/IP) Browser such as Internet Explorer Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as STC, Mobily

4 Steps to set up Internet connection using a telephone line Open Internet options in control panel. On the connections tab, click setup. Follow the on-screen instructions. Provide the ISP’s telephone number, username and password. Name the connection. Dial the number provided by your ISP. You will be connected to the internet.

5 Possible problems with an Internet connection The server is not functioning correctly. The server has been temporarily removed from the Internet. Your internet browser is not configured correctly. The TCP/IP configuration for your dial-up connection to your ISP is incorrect. Your ISP’s Domain Name Service (DNS) server is not working correctly.

6 Troubleshoot Broadband Internet Connection Check the Wires  Make sure the cable is connected securely  If you use a router, check those connections too Power Cycling  Power Cycling means turning your modem off, waiting a few seconds, then turning it on again. Weathering Storms with Satellite Internet Connections  Check if there is something in between the dish and satellite such as snow or greenery.  Check the alignment of the dish so that it properly faces the satellite.

8 Steps to change IP address for your DNS server In Control Panel, double-click Network connections Right-click your Internet connection, click properties, and then click the Networking tab Click the Internet Protocol Adapter, and then click Properties Click Use the following DNS server address, and then type the correct IP address in the Preferred DNS server box Click OK, and then click OK again
