2  The Tiber river is the third longest river in Italy.  The river has achieved lasting fame as the main watercourse of the city of Rome.  The source of the Tiber is made up of two springs on Mount Fumaiolo. The Tiber river

3 The city of Rome  Rome is the capital of Italy and also of the Province of Rome and of the region of Lazio.  Rome's history spans more than two and a half thousand years, since its legendary founding in 753 BC.  Rome is one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in Europe.

4 Pompeii  The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city.  Researchers believe that the town was founded in the seventh or sixth century BC by the Osci or Oscans and was captured by the Romans in 80 BC.  Pompeii has been a tourist destination for over 250 years.

5 Mt. Vesuvius  It is one of several volcanoes which form the Campanian volcanic arc.  Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.  Vesuvius has erupted many times since and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years.
