Physical Science Sound and Light Name: Sophie Achtenhagen & Kyenna Stanley-Reckin

Light can be reflected with mirrors Light rays can reflect off a smooth surface

Light can be refracted with lenses If you have a concave lens the light gets squished. If you have a convex lens the light spreads out.

Things that absorb light often transmit heat Black colors absorb all the light rays so black makes it hot White is the absence of the color waves so it makes you not as hot than all the other colors

Sound is affected by the matter through which it travels sound travels fastest in solids sound travels slowest in air Speed of sound through different material MaterialSpeed m/s Air343 Water1,483 Glass5,640 Steel5,940

Description of how sound waves travel Sound waves can travel through other materials besides air. As a sound waves travel through a material, the particles in the materials collide with each other. In a solid molecules are closer together then in liquid or gases, so collisions between molecules occur more rapidly then in liquid or gases. The speed of sound is usually fastest in solids where molecules are closest together, and slowest in gases, were molecules are farthest apart.

Sound waves have length, frequency, and amplitude The amplitude is the measure of the top of the wave to the middle of the wave The frequency is the measure of the width of the wave The length is the measure of the wavelength
