Unit Overview Organ Systems –Digestive System –Circulatory System –Respiratory System

Organ Systems

Function of Organ Systems SystemFunction Respiratory System Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Digestive System Chemical and physical breakdown of food into molecules small enough to pass into cells. Circulatory System Transportation of nutrients, dissolved gases, and wastes to and from body cells.

Organ Systems Organ Systems arise from… Cells  Tissues  Organs  Organ Systems  ?? Assignment: 1.Define the above terms 2.Copy Table 1 notebook Use this sheet as a quick reference for: Organs systems, majors organs, major functions

Hierarchy of Animal Systems Organ Systems (Circulatory, Digestive, Respiratory, etc.) Organs (Heart, Liver, Intestine, Blood Vessel, etc.) Tissues (Connective, Muscular, etc.) Specialized Cells (Blood, Heart, Bone, etc) Stem Cells

Tissues The smallest unit of life is the CELL. Cells that do similar things can work together as TISSUES. 4 kinds tissues: 1.Epithelial 2.Connective 3.Muscle 4.Nervous Recall: cell theory

Epithelial Tissue A covering that protects organs. Lines the body cavity. Covers the surface of the body. Like a Border!

Connective Tissue Provides support. Holds the various parts of the body together. Cartilage, bone, fat, and blood. Cartilage, bone, fat, and blood. Like Glue!

Muscle Tissue Contains sheets or bundles cells that contract to produce movement. Tightens and Loosens for movement

Nervous Tissue Provides communication between all of the body structures. Like the internet…

Tissues to Organs Many tissues will form organs… and many organs form an organ system. We need all organs for the organ system to WORK!

T-P-S: Name the Organ Systems

Organ Systems Identified A.Muscular B.Skeletal C.Nervous System D.Endocrine E.Circulatory F.Integumentary G.Lymphatic (Immune) H.Respiratory I.Digestive J.Excretory K.Reproductive You only need to know the digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems in detail!

Examining Human Organs and Systems Old Method Exploratory surgery New Methods Medical imaging technologies –X-ray –CT or CAT scan –Ultrasound –MRI Scan

X-Ray Transmits electromagnetic waves that radiate through the body. Since bone is dense, the radiation is absorbed. –Produces an image of bone structure

CT or CAT Scan Makes use of X-rays to get thin slices of a body part. –Each slice is computerized and joined to form a 3D image

Ultrasound Makes use of high frequency sound waves. –Waves are directed at a body part for a period of time in order to examine movement

MRI Magnetic Resonance Imaging Uses radio signals in a magnetic field to create images of body parts

Homework Read pages 164-166 Answer questions #1,3-5 (page 166)
